7/11/09 it's back together but if you go to the last page I have a new question.
------------------------------------------------------------
So as I asked about on here a few weeks ago the rear output on the transfer case on The Blazer was leaking a bit. I was advised to get a bushing with the rear seal and do them both at once. Got the parts at the local NAPA and brought them along down state so my buddy who's been inside this sort of transfer case could help me do it.
Seems like an easy job, right? 20 minutes if all goes well...
We pulled the yoke and driveshaft this morning, then unbolted the tailshaft housing and removed the seal. Sure enough you guys were right and the bushing was a bit boogered up. Using a punch, drift, screwdriver, curing, a hacksaw, and more cursing we removed it, cleaned up the area, and dropped the new bushing in...
...and it fell right through. That's not right...
Confirmed with kennyw that yep, it's supposed to be a snug fit and nope, this definitely wasn't right. Drove to the local AutoZone down here and found their Timken bushing did the same thing. Drove up to Grand Rapids and visited the NAPA warehouse where the stuff they had on hand did the same thing. Searched CK5 and found a post last year where someone else had the same problem and the NAPA bushing worked for them. WTF?
The area the bushing sits in doesn't seem to be oval'd or anything. You can see the factory machine marks in it still and the bushing never seems to get snugger no matter how you wiggle it. The faintest bit of light shines through around it if you hold it in place and look at a light through it.
The guy at NAPA was saying it seemed like we needed a 2" bushing and all of his were calling for a spec of 1.997" or something like that.
Anybody run into this before or have any ideas?
Would the tailshaft housing off of a 88-99 fullsize Chevy with IFS and the NP241 be the same piece? Considering possible sources if it turns out to be my piece that's bad.
Now I'm driving Big Ugly back up north 3 hours later than planned with two hyperactive dogs in the cab with me...yeah!
Oh, and does anyone know the torque on the four bolts that hold the tailshaft housing to the transfer case? Chiltons and my FSM don't mention it.
