7/11/09 it's back together but if you go to the last page I have a new question.
------------------------------------------------------------
So as I asked about on here a few weeks ago the rear output on the transfer case on The Blazer was leaking a bit. I was advised to get a bushing with the rear seal and do them both at once. Got the parts at the local NAPA and brought them along down state so my buddy who's been inside this sort of transfer case could help me do it.

Seems like an easy job, right? 20 minutes if all goes well...

We pulled the yoke and driveshaft this morning, then unbolted the tailshaft housing and removed the seal. Sure enough you guys were right and the bushing was a bit boogered up. Using a punch, drift, screwdriver, curing, a hacksaw, and more cursing we removed it, cleaned up the area, and dropped the new bushing in...

...and it fell right through. That's not right...

Confirmed with kennyw that yep, it's supposed to be a snug fit and nope, this definitely wasn't right. Drove to the local AutoZone down here and found their Timken bushing did the same thing. Drove up to Grand Rapids and visited the NAPA warehouse where the stuff they had on hand did the same thing. Searched CK5 and found a post last year where someone else had the same problem and the NAPA bushing worked for them. WTF?

The area the bushing sits in doesn't seem to be oval'd or anything. You can see the factory machine marks in it still and the bushing never seems to get snugger no matter how you wiggle it. The faintest bit of light shines through around it if you hold it in place and look at a light through it.

The guy at NAPA was saying it seemed like we needed a 2" bushing and all of his were calling for a spec of 1.997" or something like that.

Anybody run into this before or have any ideas?

Would the tailshaft housing off of a 88-99 fullsize Chevy with IFS and the NP241 be the same piece? Considering possible sources if it turns out to be my piece that's bad.

Now I'm driving Big Ugly back up north 3 hours later than planned with two hyperactive dogs in the cab with me...yeah!

Oh, and does anyone know the torque on the four bolts that hold the tailshaft housing to the transfer case? Chiltons and my FSM don't mention it.

I had the same thing happen to me. I bought a bushing from a local transmission shop and it worked as expected. Not much help, but atleast you know that it is not just your tail housing. Sorry but I don't have a part # because it was just a bushing with no package. At the time, it was also available through GM.

Thanks, it is reassuring to hear at least.

Glad I waited and did this down here where my truck already was and my buddy was around to drive me around. At home I'd just be screwed...again...

He's going to try a transmission/drivetrain shop be likes tomorrow and if not them then the semi-local Chevy dealership.

i had that problem and my tailhousing was plain wore out. just enough that it wouldnt fit. no visible scarring or anything just tiny bit of light shining through like you describe. and you need another 89 tailhousing to keep your spedometer mechanical.

i just replaced it with a new tailhousing and tightened them good'n tight with a 1/2 inch ratchet.

When I ran into this problem, it was my daily driver so I had to drive the old bushing back in until I found parts. I thought I was going to finally get that leak fixed, but it turned into a headache!!

I had the same problem. I went to several places and it was the same problem. Got a new one at the dealer and all was well.

Isn't the speedo sensor up in the case somewhere and not on the tailshaft...or did they move it 90-91 with the electronic sensor?

Right...mine is cable driven...but it's up on the case just like every other one of these truck's I've ever seen.

That said I've never seen the t-case from a 90-91 so I don't know where they put the electronic speedo sensor.

Should be fixed. My buddy went up to Berger Chevy in Grand Rapids and got the GM bushing, F11. Fit just like it's supposed to and they even pressed it in for him. All of $9.

He's driving it now to make sure all is right.

Me too. Had enough bad luck lately with stupid little things.

Hey, dumb question...does anyone know how the tailshaft housing is supposed to go on? It has the four sorta "compartments" radiating out on the inside from around the place the bushing sits. One of the compartments has a hole in it...presumably to let ATF flow back forwards into the main body of the transfer case.

Which way should that hole be? On top, on the bottom, on one of the sides? My buddy put it back on the bottom and now we're hoping that was the right decision.

You sure?

Granted I haven't seen it in a week but the housing has the four bolt holes on the corners and that's about it...everything is parallel I think...?

I know he's driven it. Not saying you aren't right but if you are then he's obviously put it together the correct way.:haha:

Was at Berger Chevy in Grand Rapids today. They didn't list any specific orientation either. Guess down is fine.
