So I just happened to be inspecting the frame for any more cracks and I found a whole bunch of engraved numbers. Located about dead center of the frame on the outside of the frame just at the height of the lip on the gas tank. Is this a partial VIN #? The frame had the exact same numbers on the opposite side too.

This is how they appeared on the frame:

14053532
3 062 O1

Can someone explain what these #s are?

My guess would be partial VIN. Go look at your VIN number and see if they match.

Ya thats why I want to decode this number because I don't have the whole VIN on the dash of my truck and I'd like to learn more about my truck. Maybe even try filling in the rest of the VIN numbers to run it through Carfax or something.

My truck must have a salvaged VIN that the state of Massachusetts had assigned the truck some years back, and I'd like to try to understand when that was and why it needed a slavage VIN. Also I'm just currious as to where the truck came from and what options it had back in '85 when it was new.

Your state modifies the VIN if it was salvaged?

No the VIN plate is totally missing. So MA put a little tag in the door jam with some 6 digit number that is to be used as the VIN in paperwork like on the Title, registration, and insurance.

I think that 140 number might be a part no.?

A part number? For what, the frame?
yep, everything GM makes has a part no.
I'm thinking that looks like a lot of 140......numbers they use for part no.s

I searched the number in GM Parts Direct and nothing came up.

But I have heard that there are partial VINs on frames so then where would that number be?

I don't even know if it exists....
The 140------number looked like a part # to me.

I've looked for frame part #s and VIN #'s but don't get info on either.

See if this makes sense with the numbers you've found

You guys think there would be a problem covering up those numbers?

I would grind them off if your concerned about wrong #'s

I see your point there...

The number doesn't seem to match up too well with any VIN decoders.

Anyone here know for sure what those numbers are?

I know you used to be able to order the whole frame from GM it might be a S.P.O. number. As long as you have paper work from the state don't worry about it unless you know more than you are saying. Just leave it be!

If you start grinding numbers off it will look like you are hiding something and will get MORE attention!

By Federal law the number, or partial number must be on the vehicle in 7 locations. Most are kept secret.
I will give you one place to check!

Stamped into the top of the frame, on the passenger's side, right below the firewall.

Nothing to hide, just questioning thier purpose. The numbers on the top of mine are CE.... stamped twice about 8 inches apart. My old Luv truck had the vin on both sides behind the front fender marker lights.

Thanks I think I found what I'm looking for:

The VIN will be on the TOP of the frame rail, that number on the side of the frame rail is a part number or plant number or something like that. But the VIN will be on the TOP of the frame rail.

Well I don't want to be grinding off any numbers. I already have all legal paper work and the state assigned VIN, so nothing I'm doing is illegal. I was really just looking for a more complete history of my truck. When I have enough time I will drive over to the DMV and ask them to pull up the records on my truck. I know that my truck is no where near original and I would like to know exactly where all the components come from. According to the PO the entire chassis is an 85, the grill is an 84, and the bed is mostlikely a 74. Through other research and familiarizing myself with the 73-87 Chevy trucks I found most of that to be true. Except the engine is from a 83 Firebird (ran the engine numbers)

I will go look right now for that number on the top of the frame. :D
