Most unhappy at work today. The guy at the bench next to mine at work was rebuilding a GM-spec 4wd NV4500 with bellhousing.
I can't tell you how badly I wanted to chuck that sucker in the back of my car and depart the scene quickly.

I hope I dont sound to retarded but what is so great about them?? automatic manual?? sorry dont know much about transmissions /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
Thanks

[/ QUOTE ]they are nice because they have a nice low first gear of 6.34:1 or 5.61:1 depending on if you have the early version or the later version and they have a over drive fifth gear, so you have a great crawl ratio and a over drive to get better gas mileage on the highway

I take it there automatic??
are they pretty strong??

No the NV4500 is a Manual 5 speed tranny that is OOOOOO so nice!!

and it is far greater

the nv4500 is a 4 speed with an od stuffed into the tailshaft as an afterthought
I looked at making a kit to do that to a sm465 but the headset ratio in the 465 requires a massive 50+ tooth OD gearset
if you change the headset it can be done mimicing or even utilizing the od set from a nv4500
in the end I think the ranger od box is a much better way to go if you have the length
I would take that over a nv4500

or gear the difs for your highway cruise rpm and use a reduction box
you will get better fuel economy in direct then you will in OD due to friction losses
OD is also a weaker gearset

If you go that route make sure you have strong driveshafts. Most of the guys around here break axles because they're running good gears. Those with airplane gears in the axles and reduction boxes will likely find the fuse is the driveshaft.

Over drive, is over rated in my opinion. I swapped it out and never looked back, even on the street. Maybe if I had 5.13s or better in an overdriven truck it'd be worth it, but if that's the case, it's likely too hardcore for the street.

Tough call, but overdrive is generally over rated IMO.

I am using a ZF 5 speed as the A box in my Bronco dual transmissions

mine does
the 4.10s are perfect hiway gears with 39s
the 4.88s are better in town gears
If I had more power I bet the 4.10s wouldnt be as painful in town
the root of the problem is the 3 speed POS transmissions that were in these old farm trucks

But does your rig see alto of highway miles? /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I have driven my rig over 400 miles in one day before this year, down the highway. In the last few months, no, but I have driven it all over including to badlands more than once.

My rig is trailered do to convenience, but it is a REAL truck, legally titled and plated for the road.

Sounds like somebody doesn't drive their trail rig on a daily basis.
If i only drove my truck a couple times a week i'd be fine with my th350 or a sm465... Driving it every day for the last 5 years makes me want an overdrive NV4500 tranny big time.. every time i get on the freeway and taching 3500 rpms speeding to keep up with traffic, i would not mind having another gear at all. If i had OD i'd probably have more speeding tickets. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif
Hmm.. $1500 tranny swap or $1000 30mpg beater car.. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I agree with you there. 4.10s are perfect with my 38s. Even in town it scoots pretty good, maybe thats because my powers not that bad?

sounds like someone geared their difs wrong

mj,
have you ever ran a Ranger, or know anyone who has? I was thinking about running one, but it seems that no one has done it in a fullsize.

never ran one
talked to few who have
the 4x4 shop that did my axles in 1992 had an electric shift one on the shop floor new in the box
the design is proven but $$

3500 RPM?

You're driving WAY too fast then.

My truck even with 5.13s wouldn't be that bad going down the highway.

I don't drive my trail rig, but last year I drove the [censored] out of it, even on the expressway, and this year I have made multiple 4 hour + runs down the highway without issues.
