I have a 90 3/4 burb that is a factory 4spd truck. Has been LS swapped, and my question is, was there a year of NV4500 that would bolt up to the 03 5.3 engine and also the np241 factory tcase? I know the transfer case at some point came behind the 6.0 in the early 2000s

Any 4500 that came behind a small block will work, they all have 32 spline output so as long as your 241 is 32 spline input you’re good

So i just need to find me an OBS chev small block nv from 95+? will a dodge one work too? and does it have to be for a 4wd?

You will want to stick to 96+ gm 4x4 for the easiest route. Any gm 4x4 nv4500 will work.
You can convert any dodge to a gm if you find a 2wd. Any 2wd can be converted to 4x4.

Alright thanks. SM465 with 37s and 4.56 gears has great drive-ability it would just be real nice to have that OD on the highway.

That is on the mark. More specifically you need the flywheel from a 2000-2007 2500 with a 6.0 or a 2000-2007 1500 with a 4.8. They should be the same part number honestly.

But that flywheel will be the right thickness to work with the 4500 and ls combo.

Shooting for a 4500 in a truck from 96 and up will make it easiest for clutch hydraulics. Just make sure you get the bellhousing with the trans. If you get a 4500 from a 2000-2007 gmt800 truck the shift tower will be taller than the earlier units but otherwise the same back to ‘96.

You can go through many threads here on the swap including mine for more detail.

Dodge 4500’s won’t work. Don’t bother looking for one.

appreciate all the info, thank you.

in your opinion is it worth it?

only reason i even considered it is because its highway to get anywhere from where i live and 70mph at 3k rpm gets annoying after a while

Is it worth it over a dump truck 465? If you drive on the highway at all it sure is.

I’ve got one behind my 8.1 and it’s the only way I would go. I can blast down the highway at 80 mph with 4.10 gears and 35’s and it’s only turning 2300rpm.

Though I will admit the gear splits between 3rd and 4th are almost as bad as the 465. However the generous torque of the 8.1 pretty much overcomes that issue. A lower torque 5.3 might not react the same but I wouldn’t let that hold you back.

In lazy old man driving mode I’ve been known to skip third and go to fourth and then fifth. Or skip fourth and go from third to fifth. The 8.1 don’t care but a lower torque ls may not be happy about getting into od at a low speed/rpm.

I think you would rather have it at 35s or lower axle gears to maximize the benefits.
But you can also go 85 just fine.

i have also considered pulling the 3/4 tons with 4.56s and putting them into my 86 k5 that already has a 700r4 with the 37s, and trying to find some 4.10 tons and 35s for the burb. k5 is currently on factory 10 bolts with 3.07 gears and 33s, so it has the opposite problem lol

Personal opinion, not worth it, it’s 500 rpm at the end of the day, but I don’t own anything with OD so I just let them sing at 3,000

It’s not sounding like it’s worth it unless you tire down or gear lower at the same time which just adds to the overall cost.

:dunno:
I guess when you get to 37” tires the definition of highway running is relative.

But speaking from experience having a 5.3 in a heavy K5 like mine I was needing an extra gear to pull because the 700r4 just couldn’t cut it on highway grades. The lack of torque in the 5.3 had me going between second gear wound right then to third and when speed fell off back to second again.

I can only imagine how gutless a 5.3 would be going uphill with 40’s even with 5.13 gears. Not saying the 5.3 would be any less gutless with the 4500 but at least you had another gear to choose from.

I mean as of right now I can hold 65 at a 5% grade in 4th no problem so maybe I do just leave it alone with the 37s. Hell idk there is no perfect driving situation with a modified 30 year old rig

A Dodge NV4500 uses a different output shaft.spline..... it also has a Synchromesh reverse gear.

Any Dodge NV4500 could be rebuilt to fit your application.
