I'm doing a NV4500 swap on my M1008, my old flexplate had 139 teeth, my new flywheel has 139 teeth (perfection from advance auto), I have a gear reduction starter which worked fine with the flexplate with no shims, with the flywheel it collided, shimmed it a little it until it engaged but wouldn't release, shimmed more and it releases but still sounds horrible, I have approximately 1/8" of shim and it still isn't right. that seems like too much for me. what could be wrong? what do I need to check next? the entire drivetrain is in, should of checked this with just the flywheel installed but didn't. is there a trick to engage the nose gear of the starter without power so I can get a better picture of whats going on? thanks in advance.
