I'm doing a NV4500 swap on my M1008, my old flexplate had 139 teeth, my new flywheel has 139 teeth (perfection from advance auto), I have a gear reduction starter which worked fine with the flexplate with no shims, with the flywheel it collided, shimmed it a little it until it engaged but wouldn't release, shimmed more and it releases but still sounds horrible, I have approximately 1/8" of shim and it still isn't right. that seems like too much for me. what could be wrong? what do I need to check next? the entire drivetrain is in, should of checked this with just the flywheel installed but didn't. is there a trick to engage the nose gear of the starter without power so I can get a better picture of whats going on? thanks in advance.

What bell are you using? I used the AA bell for my NV4500 swap and had an interference problem between the starter nose and the inside of the bell. If you're using a factory bell I'll just shut up...

Aside from the AA bell casting isuue I've never had a starter engagement problem with the 6.2. i use a Bosch reman 28 MT gear reduction starter in my Jimmy, and the factory 27MT direct drive in my 83 pick-up. Neither one uses any shims.

yeah, I'm using the factory bell for now, no interferance issues there but I can't figure this out, is there a wrong flywheel with the right tooth count they could of gave me? the starter stayed put during the whole install and wasn't even close to engaging when I first tried. I'm guessing I'm going to be pulling the tranny back off today after I sleep to find some answers. snows on the way, I need this running.

you are right, 1/8 of shims is way too much, I am useing the stock bell housing from a 97 BB on my 87 6.2 with a nv4500, and stock starter as well and have had to problems, I am guesing you have a fly wheel issue.

Took everything off and found the pivot point for the clutch fork had snapped off, not sure how that affected the starter engagement but the starter appears to mesh fine. I'll know more tomorrow, maybe the fork didn't allow the flywheel to spin and made the gear jam, I'll have to be more carefull on the install, as always thanks for the help.
