awhile back i picked up a 1990 pass. drop np241 27 spline case for a mock up case. Now i'm gettin ready to start puttin all this together. I need to find a np241 32 spline input gear to marry the trans and tcase behind my lq4. Anyone know where i can find this gear?

I got one for my old case from a member here but you can use one from any drivers side drop 241 case from later its trucks.

There was a change in the way the gears were cut in '94, the early ones (like you need) aren't available new and are pretty rare. The 94+ stuff physically fits but destroys everything in short order.

What's the differance? I need to track down a couple 32 spline cases for my 4500's. I thought I could get of easy by finding a newer case and swaping inputs.

early cases had a wider tooth. identified at the tip of the tooth. If you're not familiar with them, they're easily confused. They fit in place of eachother, but will NOT last.

I've got some 32 spline inputs. I'll have to see if they're narrow or wide tooth.

Based on the way it is worded above, the difference is the cut of the gears, not the input splines. That's how I read it anyway.

So the moral of the story is that if cheap 241's 1989-1993 can be had, grab them for the input gear alone, particularly the 32 spline ones?

The way I'm understanding it, you need to match the early input gear with the older t-case. The later ones 95+(?), are cut different. The trans won't care what is behind it, the splines are the same. It is how the teeth mesh with the t-case years that cause the problems.

And I'm guessing you can't swap guts between pass drop and driver drop. That would be too easy, and would probably be know information that's out there. On the other hand, this info apparently wasn't that widely known.

Splines are the same throughout, it's the way the input gear meshes with the planets inside the t-case. Passenger/driver side drop doesn't matter for the input gear, just the year split.
