OBD II Readers

As a follow up.....
I ended up with the Autel AL619 which can be found on amazon prime for $99. Very user friendly interface that has been a great tool for diagnosing several issues ranging from engine codes, ABS and SRS in the last 6 months that I've owned it. A good friend of mine is a mechanic and recommended the tool based on his experience with it.

I am in the market for one and drug up this thread; are you still like the one you got?

Lemar BlueDriver OBD plug and APP for my phone.
Seems to do everything I need. Reads in real-time, graphs, sensor output, etc.
Paid $100 few years ago

Yep and I use it all the time on a variety of vehicles troubleshooting problems. The live data is pretty handy for those weird issues.

I took your advice and tried to win one off eBay several times. kept losing. then at work one day I happened to look and one was about to end and the bid was only $28. ended up winning it for $29 and I had been bidding $50-65 on the other ones.

Score!

Are you guys that bought the OBDLink MX still pleased with it? I'm needing a scan tool that I can use on Audi, Ford and Honda. Would prefer hardwire USB over Bluetooth so I can connect to a laptop and stable connectivity, but it looks like to cover most autos, the Bluetooth devices only do that.

I'm seeing that most of the Audi owners go with VAG-COM which is specific to the Volkswagen family. The Honda OBD2 scanners I've found are limited (no SRS, ABS, brakes and Airbags). I'm narrowing it down to this OBDLink MX since it seems like it's more universal.

My immediate need is to troubleshoot an A/C issue on the 2007 Audi A3.

I will ask my buddy with vw and Audi cars, he has something on his laptop with a cable

My guess is it's VAG-COM and VCDS. That's the most popular with the VW and Audi folks. Suppose to access everything. I don't need OCD just OBD, ;).

@imiceman44, how are you likin' the OBDLink so far?

I like it, I have not had the chance to go in depth with all it's potential but it has it's own software not the generic app, and it does have lots of features.
I haven't had any transmission problems on the newer stuff, the 97 Jimmy had a transmission problem but it was a regular engine code so the other obd2 did deal with it, nothing special.
I need to check the abs code on that Jimmy and see if it works, it came on a few days ago

It's been working ok for me. But I've only used it on gm and a dodge once. haven't used on Honda VW/Audi

By the way I have used mine on GM, Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Nissan and dodge.

I bought this one yesterday on Amazon: Bafx Products - Wireless Bluetooth OBD2 / OBDII Diagnostic Car Scanner & Reader Tool
I haven't decided between the OBDLink MX+ or BlueDriver. Both of the latter are the same cost ~$99. Still looking at which has more capability, don't really care about the buzzers and bells.

The family has a few Nooks that aren't used anymore, I'm hoping to use those with the scan tools instead of my phone.

Still waiting!

I'll be getting a spare key fob/remote for the Audi A3 that I'll also be using the OBDII tool with. Sound like this car's remote also has an immobilizer which needs to be set up in addition to programming the remote and key cutting. Have anyone of you needed the OBD2 scanner to program keys or immobilizer for any make/model?

Added after reading the manual (sshhhh!) for
OBDLink MX+
Immobilizer for Audi - no access, GM - yes

BlueDriver
Immobilizer/Key programming - no

Getting access to basically everything, including key programming and the immobilizer might be why the VoA people go with VAG-COM/VCDS. The extra cost of VAG-COM would probably pay for itself.

I have one of these in every vehicle and I have the mx for special cases that are not covered in the basf

I have not messed with any VAG stuff, but I've done BMW... coding and programming takes a while to get ahold of on BMW. I would rather have bought a $300 programmer , compared to a $20 cable and pirated BMW software on laptop... its sketchy. No idea what it looks like with audi.
