I bought a 700R4 and NP 241 T-case to add an OD to my 5/4 ton Army truck. But I just had the driveshaft retubed thanks to the people at Government Liquidators who like to use forklifts! And I'm guessing that with the shorter 700R4 I will again need to redo the driveshaft(s).
Could i put a 4L80 tranny in place of the TH400 that is in there and save myself some work/money?

4L80 will need a stand alone electronic controller or manual valve body kit. You already have the 700, why not use that? No electronics and plenty strong for a 6.2 diesel(I have one behind a 6.2 in my sub). You will need to redo the driveshafts on the tuck if you put in a 4L80 as well, so why spend even more money on another tranny.

Well, that is my question. I thought that the 4L80 was a bolt in replacement for the TH400? If so, I won't have to change the driveshafts. And weren't some delivery vans equiped with a 6.2 and a manual 4L80? If the 4L80 is a direct replacement, I can just bolt it up to the 208 T-case in the truck now and use the existing driveshafts, mounts, linkage, etc.

Not quite. The 4l80e is about 4 inches longer than your old th400. This will place your tcase lever back as well as the output for your driveshaft(it will need to be shorter), and your transmission support crossmember. You could get a factory manual 4l80e, but would imagine those are hard to come by and expensive when you do find one. I just did that exact swap actually only I used a 4l80e out of a wrecked 93 3500 4x4 diesel chevy and swapped it into my 85 m1008. I got lucky in that case because I paid $200 for the tranny, which can normally run anywhere from $700-1000+. Seeing that deal allowed me to save some cash and get a compushift controller to make everything work, they are expensive but well worth the money, and the tech support is second to none in that aftermarket niche. Otherwise I would have opted to get a built 700r4 from BTO. Using a 4l80e over a 700r4 will allow you to keep your stock transfer case, and flywheel, but you will have to redo your transmission support crossmember since it places the mounts 4 inches to the rear. It would be ideal to shorten your rear ds and lengthen your front ds if your lift is not changing whether factory or otherwise.
