I would love to know what the actual valving is in the ORD shocks also. I emailed BILSTEIN a while back asking them for a suggestion on my rig. Here is my question and their response. Not trying to add confusion but rather try and come up with some answers.

Email inquiry:
I have a 1970 K5 blazer with a 4” lift kit and am looking at putting longer travel shocks on it. I have come up with a couple of options based on the amount of travel I am looking for but am trying to figure out what valving options to go with. I know you sell a kit for the 73 and up K series blazer and trucks with part numbers 24-187077 in the front and 24-187084 in the rear but there is no information on the valve rate. From the research I have done it looks like potentially 255/70 on the 24-1870077 and either 255/70 or 170/60 in the rear 24-187084. Am I on the right track or way off.
Thank you,

BILSTEIN’S Response:
Hello,

I would recommend a 360/80 for front and rear, this would be closest to the valving in the vehicle specific 4600 series part numbers 24-009232 front and 24-192941 rear.

Thanks for your inquiry

I would love to hear some more response from any one who has done the research also.

This is exactly why I trust ORD as they have done the research and testing. I don't believe that they charge that much more to give you a product that they have found good results with.
I am happy with the shocks that they sd me for my '90.
My '70 has Bilstiens that I bought with just my measurements from when it had Tuff country springs. They are not quite optimum perfect.

To the OP, I hope that you have found what you want. I know that these trucks and lift kit springs can cause lots of variables, just like each person's usage can affect what to use.

I’m in in this too as I will need some in the not so distant future. I always just bought off the shelf shocks or what was recommended for certain height lift kits. It’s time to get some correct billsteins soon. My rancho 4 inch lift shocks are almost dead. I have a 5 inch lift now though with extended shackles and zero rate rear. I’ll be watching as well to see what ultimately works for you and others.

I looked up Your part numbers they sent you for the front and it came up as stock length replacement shocks. The rear came up as a lift shock though. I’m not sure they looked at you lift amount just what fit a stock truck in the front.

Seems quit a bit a people are confused on this subject, and are in need of shocks but have no idea what to do. I still have yet to order anything shock wise.

Would be nice if ORD jumped in here or made a video for youtube and explained exactly what they do to the shocks. Furher, what makes buying their products a better fit for K5’s, instead of whatever summit etc. sells off the shelf when you put in your vehicle.

These are their custom fit eye to eye shocks in their catalog that I was comparing against when I asked that question of them. I was mainly looking for what suggested valving they would give so I could compare to what they have off the shelf. If you look there are only a few shocks that have the suggested valving of 360/80. That’s why I would love to know if ORD takes the standard length and has the valving changed to Bilsteins suggestion or if it is something entirely different that you get from ORD. If it truly is something you can only get from ORD.

I've got the ord shocks and the part numbers do not have the 360/80 valving.

I can’t say one way or another, but here is a 14” 5125 Sold by ORD for the front of 1 ton truck(not mine) with a BB. I bought the whole suspension set up new unused from a dead project. This was a sale from multiple years ago, and things may have changed. I’m not going to try and cross reference the number, but feel free if you’re so inclined. Maybe it has some sort of special order valving, but that would be surprising to me. I think I looked at one time and it was 255/70.

That is an old part number which doesnt cross to my current numbers.

They are 5 dollars more to buy from ord than other retailers. Why waste the time. Just make a call and get the right stuff.

This is my thought as well.
:waytogo:

Because you can buy the 12” shocks for my application for $67.95 elsewhere with free shipping. (4wheelparts on eBay) but the valve rating is 255/70 on part number 33-185569 not the suggested 360/80. That’s $30 cheaper per shock.

But if it isn't what you want..
If you had something that you did the research on, would you give it away for free if it was part of your income or business? That wouldn't put food on the table..

I do understand that aspect for sure. That’s why I haven’t asked for ORD to chime in. I’m not in a position to buy the shocks yet either. When I am I am planning on calling to try and acquire that information. But having worked wholesale myself I know it is up to the buyer to get the information they want and to shop around for themselves. By all means if they do in fact do more than just resell a off the shelf shock it would be worth the extra $30 when you are paying almost $100 per shock. But on the flip side $120 over 4 shocks could be well used elsewhere on our projects and that is hard to argue with.

I want to buy from ORD, they nor anyone here has made any comment as to why? Just because isnt a reason.

What do they do to bilsteins that makes them better for my K5?

R&D. They took the time and countless configurations and chose what worked best on countless trucks and used their decades of information gathering to make a judgment on what to put on their own trucks and sell along with some of their other products that are good companion parts to these shocks.
