So just picked me up a 89 Diesel Jimmy from Mr. Blazer himself (kgblazerfive).

Well the trans is going out it will barely move in reverse (yes the fluid is full). Anyone ever have a transmission cause vibrations? Well vibration is such a mild term, it shakes. But only under load, shaking becomes a vibration under heavy load. It does not do much of anything except glide right along when coasting or under light throttle conditions.

Well sometimes under coasting nothing, maybe just a little driveline vibration, but you go 3/4 throttle in this thing and it feels like clutch chatter except a little slower in pace than a clutch chatter.

I drove it home (about 200 miles) and ending up finding a happy spot in 3rd (its a 700) at about 55. It did well there until I got to a small hill then had to give it throttle to get up the hill, unless I gave it full throttle than the shake became a vibration.

3rd was the happiest gear, overdrive did the shaking thing alot more than 3rd did on the highway and since you are mostly accelerating in 1st and 2nd they seemed to do it all the time.

We checked it over for loose bolts bad u joints bad tranny mounts etc.

I do have a new trans to put in it (thanks Keith) just hoping it will cure my shakes

My 89 Jimmy (350/700R4) had some similar nonsense. Vibrated real bad when the torque converter locked up and was under load. During normal acceleration and unlocked converter it was fine. Turned out the rear u-joint was thrashed. You couldn't tell by twisting the driveshaft around. I was with Pauly383 for a few days and mentioned my vibration issues.

He and I crawled under and decided it could use a new trans mount, and the u-joints seemed good, but would probably be a good idea to replace them.

Drove to a driveline shop in phoenix, pulled my rear driveshaft to find my u-joints hanging by a thread. The needle bearings were gone and the metal ears were flattened like a cigarette butt.

New joints fixed a lot of the problematic vibrations I had, but not completely.

could be the trans, or the joints.
My bet is on the trans since it was different in 3rd.
If it was the joint, it should be same in all gears, unless the lock up feature is not working properly in all gears. :dunno:

In addition I know the trans is going south, it takes about 5 minutes for reverse to engage:D and I actually had to put in in 4 low to back up a slight incline.

The t-case is leaking a good bit too from the tail housing, it has a cv rear driveshaft with a slip yoke, so that is suspect too. When I pull the trans I will go over the driveshafts with a fine tooth comb.
Plus I need to check rear wheel bearings and will pull the diff covers and check gears and the such.
