Oil as an additive in diesel fuel??

So, when I first bought my M1009, I changed the oil going by the recommendation on the sun visor. I bought a case of 30w oil, used 7 qts. I found out that 30w really isn't the best, so I switched out to Rotella 15w40. So, I now have 5 quarts of brand new 30w sitting at my house. Can I just pour this in my fuel tank? Like 1 quart a fillup, or more??? I don't want to toss it, and if I can burn it, why the hell not, right?

thanks!

I don't know about using 30W...but over on the Cummins Forum I go to they use 2 cycle oil...I use all of my extra motor oil for my lawnmower...that sucker has seen from 15/40 to 20/50:D...

Lots of guys use ATF or similar (I'm sure motor oil would be fine) a quart at a time to add some lubrication properties to the ultra-low sulfur diesel.

You should not have any troubles. I've used 2stroke, ATF, and oil. I typically run ATF. A quart to a full tank should be fine.

I run USED engine oil through a 5micron filter, then pour it in, never more than half oil to have diesel fuel. Also do the same with used trans fluid. if I have a half quart left over in a bottle after an oil change on something, in the truck it goes! =)

30W what? Was it rated for the diesel or did you just grab any old 30W?

I just grabbed whatever.. I read the little codes on the bottle and made sure it met or exceeded the ratings recommended on the sun visor.

I only ran it for about 200 miles with it. Then I found out that I should be using a 15w40, so I changed it all out.

When I ran Power Service in Big Ugly folks mentioned lube troubles with the ULSD and ND30w was recommended to rectify this. Sort of a "better than nothing" solution to the problem. I put one once in for ever gallon of gas I put in and had no issues for two years. I've since switched to 4x4xGod's ACES diesel fuel treatment stuff and stopped adding the oil. Truck seems fine and doesn't smoke slightly under heavy throttle like it did when I put the 30w in.

Thanks for the mention, Andrew!:bow:

My take on oil as a fuel additive:

yes, motor oil and ATF will " burn", but as for actually providing lubricity, nope.. all it's doing is turning to carbon in there..and the metallic additives , and polymer viscosity indexers leave deposits when the base oil goes poof...and heavy oils also affect cetane and fuel viscosity, which can lead to other issues.

even two stroke oil turns to a nice carbonaceous goo.. gotta remember, a truck isn't a lawnmower..and the two stroke engines it's designed for don't produce the combustion temps that your truck does..

IIRC, a direct injected two stroke has combustion temps of around 120F...a four stroke diesel produces combustion temps anywhere from 750 F to over 1000F, depending.. The common rail injection systems generate serious heat too, so coking at the injector tip is a real issue.

Now, I know guys burn whatever in their fuel and "have no problems".. if the engine isn't grenading, I guess that's success to some people..maybe on the older stuff it's not a big deal to dump whatever in.. If emissions, ring land deposits, injector coking, and bore scuffing aren't a big deal, then rock on..

I couldn't agree more. For most of us that are running all kinds of mystery oils in our engines, it's a cost now vs cost later. I'm saving fuel cost now. When/if it blows up (more when), I'll address a new engine then. I wouldn't fuel my truck like I do if I was trying to get 30-50k miles/yr out of it and expect it to last 300k+ miles. I drive it 5k miles a year, and if that engine lasts another 10-15k, I'll be plenty happy.

I would do the same with a 6.2l engine, they are plentyfull and still cheap enough at the junk yards or even by buying a complete truck for the engine.
The savings are worth it.
On my big rig engine that needs to be reliable and run a million miles I only use the best fuel and the best additives, and yes I use the ACESII additives as well.
I was testing another additive for the past 3 months because they claimed a 20% increase in mileage ( I was getting a modest 5-10% increase with ACESII) but I noticed with this one I lost mileage about 10%.
SO as soon as I get around to it I am ordering the ACESII, TOM I will give you a call.
