I'm still a guy who likes to do his own maintenance. I worked in a quickie lube a while back and have seen some of the things the other toolboxes that worked there did so I'm scarred for life.

Anyways... on my 05. Z71 5.3L, I've found that when I spin the filter back a ways to let it drain the some of the oil ever so conveniently runs in between the oil pan and the skid plate. The gap isn't big enough to get a rag in there to soak it up. So my options are to a. go to a car wash right away and get an underbody flush or b. deal with the oil leaking off the skid plate for a few days and having it all over my garage floor.

Anyone got any nifty ideas for keeping things a little cleaner down there?

Thanks in advance

small piece of sheet aluminum ....cut and bent to fit up under the filter works for me...diverts the oil and lets it drain down into the bucket
Cardboard would work too..in a pinch.

couple tips

i work at a quick lube spot. my disclaimer is that im only working there while i go to school. anyways couple tips ive picked up 1. take an awl and punck a hole in the body of the filter to drain out the oil. from here you can use a pan to direct the oil. 2. use a freezer ziplock bag, fold over the ziplock part and spin off the filter. the ziplock bag will catch the oil and the filter. make sure you use the freezer bags cause the cheap one will sometimes melt if the oil is to hot. hope these help.

Hey, I was going to mention the ziplock bag idea! That's mine! But the punch ... that's great! :thumb:

I thought the purpose of an oil change was that hot molten mess running down your arm and soaking your shirt?

remove skid plate and trim 1/2" around oil filter area.

also 45* the drain plug area wee it drips on when almost empty on drian hole from pan.

or just live with the stupid design from them.

Why not just take the plate off? It's only 4 bolts heck you could even take 3 out, loosen the 4th and spin the plate over out of the way.

Hey, none of this low tech stuff. I think he should either get one of those oil extractor things which sucks the oil out of the dipstick tube, or get a remotely mounted oil filter setup. Both of those are WAy more cool than cutting holes or removing bolts.

Come on guys, it's 2011! :D

FWIW, oil filters and oil in general will last to about 10k miles before it really starts to break down and need a change. A big study was done with New York Taxi cabs, and only at 10,000 miles or more did the engines start to show wear. 3k miles? You are wasting money, time, effort and oil by changing it more than needed unless you only drive 10 minutes at a time. 20 minute commute? You don't need to change it as often.

This is a good read:

I'm sure I do it more frequently than necessary, but this motor has 188k on it and I treat it as nicely as I can. It's only like $4 for a new filter at NAPA and takes me all of a couple minutes to pop the hood and swap the filter (it's bolted to the fan shroud).

90% of the miles that it gets are actually before operating temp. and 10 minutes or less. I live really close to everywhere I need to be...Reno's pretty small lol. I have a different pattern in Alaska where it is more humid and cold, but I don't worry too much about condensation here when it only rains like 6" a year haha.

ya'll both know my ex-wife ??? dang...
