I've been fighting with these dumb "oversized socket" style ones and they never seem to fit properly. I'm guessing there is no real standard on the size of the end of a filter? Sometimes they won't get on (especially the "grip" filters) and today I had one that would not catch for anything. Anyway, I'm considering this one:

Opinions?

I run strictly band filters.... stuff like that just crushes the filter... if it's on too tight, move the band one all the way down to the base... if that doesn't get it, no filter wrench will...

FTR, I change probably 250 to 300 filters a year...

Can you link an example? Do you mean this kind of thing? Works okay, but many times there isn't access.

yup, that's exactly what I'm talking about.. a quality one of those will dog any of those hokey ones..... granted, many of my filters are pretty easy access, I'm not doing Honda's...

o.p. I have the small and large of that style . I love them when I use to turn a wrench for a living .

I use one of these ,works great doesn't crush filters gets into tight areas

I've found the strap style works really well. Especially on Ls engines where there isn't much room for other type wrenches. But lately I find myself springing for the k&n filters that have a 1" nut on the end. Hit it with a socket and done.

Another band wrench guy for most except new cars with cartridge type. Expect Honda do have there factory oil filter cup and use it on all Honda's we own.

I use and will never change from the plier style filter tool. I have 2 different sizes and each on adjusts to 2 different sizes. If I am taking a filter off I don't really care if it crushes a little.
