Hi,
I have a Big Block Chevy with stock pan.
I'm installing a Hi-Volume Oil pump and wandering
how far from the pan I should set it?

I've never buitl a big block, but when I built my small block I simply turned the engine over on the stand so the bottom was facing up. I installed the oil pan pickup in a way so that is was quite a bit too far up, or away from the block. Then I carefully placed the oil pan on the block and that pushed the pickup into the closest distance it could be to the oil pan. Then I removed the oil pan, adjusted the pickup just a little bit more towards the block, maybe 1/2" - 3/4", and that way it.

The rebuild books have a distance they specify for the pickup to be away from the bottom of the pan.

Hey Thanks!
I've always gone 3/4" or under, But I'm wandering if
a Hi-Volume would be different possibly down more in the pan, I've heard of such things as runnin the pan dry in high RPMs with these pumps!

Anyone else have an idea!

It should be between 3/8" & 1/2". Remember to check with the gasket in place or you will have more than desired after assembly.
