OK....let's talk some drivetrain.......

Greg,
Agreed 100%, when I built my Jeep it was strictly for off road. It can be driven on the road, (licenced and insured) but with full hydro steering, 5.13 gears, detroit lockers front and rear, and 42" IROKS .....it really ain't a mall crawler! downright scary :eek1: over 45MPH! It's always trailered to the trails.

My son, broke once and we had to trailer his DD Jeep, while I drove mine back, luckily we weren't too far away:D

Here, they have closed the Tellico OHV park and now the places to ride are limited, private, and far off to get to. Although I still maintain my Jeep and keep it going, I just don't go wheeling much anymore. I'm seriously considering pulling the TPI out and either stick a junk yard motor in it and sell it or part it out.

This Blazer will most likely be just restored to a classic driver. Something I can enjoy and some day pass along to my little grandson.

Around here any first gen K5/blazers are very rare, and that was why I chose to undertake this project.

didn't know anyone liked a 305. You can make sm block Chevy do whatever you want. If its got as much rust as my rust colander has or had you can easily spend 20k on the body.

I was never a big fan of the 305 especially when they first started with the carburated versions. Saw a bunch of them with worn camshafts.
This 305 TPI in the Jeep don't have a lot of horsepower but it's got a lot of low end torque.
I bought the whole car (92' TA) off Ebay. It was wrecked in the front so I cut off all the yuck, zip-tied a radiator on it and test drove it. It surprised me how well it ran and the 700r4 worked perfectly!
Had it in the Jeep for several years, what I like is......you can get it lined up on an obstacle and tromp it......and it brings the 42" iroks ALIVE! I think it would be a good all around motor with the 700r4 for the Blazer if I decide to use it?
Plus the TPI just LOOKS so cool!

Drivetrain dilemma solved!

2002 TransAm LS1 with LS6 intake......4L60E......
still in car, heard it run, drove it......less than 100K
complete take out.

booya!
price?

Found it locally on CL $3000.00....turns out it was an old buddy from high school that I used to drag race with, hadn't seen him in years, he let me have it for $2200.00
I'm stoked about this. He's done several swaps and is a wealth of information, even offered to come help!

$2200 for an engine plus a brain to pick sounds like a great deal to me.

Why are you so set on an NP205? Other than brute strength, they are kind of a ****ty transfer case.

No dead set on it...yet....it's just what I have already and I was planning on rebuilding and twin sticking it anyway.

I'm looking to see what is available in some other part number. What I'm finding is most of the later models are for driver side drop. Especially the ones that bolt to a 4L60E.......school me......please!

I've got a couple old Ford high pinion, 8 lug, driver drop, 44 fronts that I could convert to 6 lug but not really wanting to go that route.

By all means, I am open to suggestions/recommendations for something else as this truck will not see any serious off road time.

on edit: I suppose I could just drop the coin for an Atlas........"might as well"?

You are only going to find drivers drop T-Cases for the 4L60E.

NP205 has the worst gear ratio of all the transfer cases. 2:1 reduction in low range. You won't break it, but you won't be geared very low in 4wd low range. Probably not the end of the world if your primary goal is to drive it on the street.

Atlas seems like a bit of overkill for a street rig, IMO. If you want lower TC gears, look at the NP 241. I think you can get it with the mechanical speedo in the first few years it was out or maybe convert the VSS to mechanical. Seems like a lot of extra work, but you could....

1990 and 1991 appear to be the electronic years of the 241 http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3403685#post3403685

Unless the objective is just to spend as much money as possible, this doesn't make a lot of sense.

Don't worry, you'll get plenty of opportunities to spend money on a 1st Gen.... No need to go out of your way looking for unnecessary expenditures.

That was just a little attempt at satire...:D.....kinda a reference to one member who has a "might as well" build.....:waytogo:......you might know him?

I don't want to, and won't, cut corners now that I'm armpit deep in the build, but I won't be bragging on youtube like some I've seen that claim "I spent over 60 thousand dollars on this project"

The 205 with a rebuild and probably a twin stick mod, will be just dandy for what I intend for this old K5.

Why not run an NP241 behind it? My 91 has a 4l60 with a 241 and it's passenger drop...

Simple can be the best option....

I'd probably not even bother with the twin-stick for a light wheeler/ daily driver.

Sometimes spending too much time on CK5 will start to convince you that you need all sorts of upgrades that you really don't.... :)

point taken......when I'm not puttting in time working on it, I suppose I'm "thinking" too much....:D......just trying to stay excited and motivated to stick to it.
