Looking to get a tow rig here soon, but on a high school budget. About a 2500 max. Looking for a tow/daily driver truck. I'm a little worried about the gas mileage of a 454 but I'm put off by the insane prices of those old first gen dodge diesels. I see 454 chevys for 1300 all the time and those dodges go for 2500 for a total p.o.s. Which one would you guys get? I'll be towing cars.

Will you be towing cars on occasion or towing cars for a living? I've towed a 16' car hauler with a Dodge Dakota 4cyl. It wasn't pretty, but it did it. I've towed a 20' enclosed car hauler with a lifted suburban with a 350. A one ton with a gasser will pull cars all day long. I'd get a manual trans whatever you decide. I agree the first gen dodge prices are rediculous, specially since the whole truck is crap but the motor.

I'd do 1800 for that in a heart beat. I'll be hauling cars often, I could probably do it with a 350 but the k30s are just as cheap.

It's been awhile since i've been back east, but pennsy is nothing but hills. I'd get the diesel. One thing I've learned over the years is you can't have too much motor:D

Yeah I was leaning towards the diesel. Are first gen dodges decent trucks? because I don't want a poor truck just for the engine.

The conventional wisdom here is go with the diesel because simply puts diesels were built with towing in mind.

Well your right 1st gen Dodges with the cummins in them are overpriced. You can get them around here for about 2500 bucks. With about 300k on them. Most of them autos. IF you can find a cummins with a 5 speed within your budget then go for it.

I would buy the gas truck. You are on a high school budget. While a big block is not really cheap to fix, it is cheaper than a cummins. Alot of times you can find good running big blocks for less than a grand. I have been looking at cummins engines for a year now, I can't touch a running cummins for less than 2k, they are dang near worth more out of the truck than with the whole truck.

A big block will tow just fine. It may tow a bit slower and it will get worse mileage but at least here diesel is so much more than gas you have to double the mileage to break even.

That said I back in the day when first gen cummins were brand new I got the chance to tow with one vs a big block truck. On hills the cummins would walk away from the big block, but on flatter ground that big block would hang right with the cummins.

Consider a mid 90s Ford with a 5 speed, they are great trucks. The fuel injected trucks will get 10 mpg towing a car, sometimes more if you are gentle and you can push them hard. The 5 speed will give you almost enough gear selection to hang pretty good on steep grades.

So while the conventional wisdom says diesel is the only way to go. Gas trucks can tow and big block trucks can tow pretty dang good

I've owned a couple first gens and a second gen. The first gens tow alright in stock form but they are hard to get parts for, you'll notice there is no lmc or any other catalog for the first gens. there is a good reason for that, they are an ugly pos.:DIf your going diesel get a second gen 12 valve dodge 4x4 extended cab with a manual:DThen when you spend money on it you have somthing worth spending money on:D

Ok. If it were me......

I'd score a sweet chev crew gasser. A 4x4 manny tranny of course. Drive it for awhile as is while you source a good 12v cummins for it. Then you'll have a setup worth passing on to your kids.

Damn i'm good. Just ask my wife:D

yeah I mite just get the gasser thanks for the input. I'll post pics with what I end up buying.

I had a 1990 Dodge W350 and loved it. The thing was a beast I never hooked up to anything it couldn't pull. With a few minor upgrades you can add alot of power as well. The first gens are over priced but you get alot of truck for the money. Mine had a dana 60 and a dana 80 paired with the cummins and those by themselves are worth some coin. If you are getting it to DD as well as tow the mileage of the diesel will also be a bonus.

Go with cummins. people just like to be on a band wagon about them being bad. i have used both alot. i see alot more problems with the chevys wiring and other randoms like radio etc. as long as you take care of your trucks both will last you well. cummins has power, built for towing. in the end cummins is just the way to go.

I have a 91 with a five speed extended cab. I have no complaints other then its not a four door and a 4x4 but that will be fixed soon. I drive it every day 20-22 mpg air works pw and locks and it has pulled a 22000 lb track hoe without any issues. Paid $3500 for it 240000 miles

My 2wd 454 th400 81 creww is parked cuz of the 6-9 mpg it gets

If you can swing the diesel get it
