I have an opportunity to pick up an old 68 Lincoln continental for ultra cheap. Anyone know the engine options back then so I can tell what it has? The engine looks physically larger than the normal small block chevy so I'm looking for advice on what it might have?

Should have a 462 mel
462 cid engine block casting numbers:

C6vy-a........1966-68
c6ve-a........1966-68
c6v..............1966-68

462 CYLINDER HEAD CASTING NUMBERS:

C6VE-A....1966-68
C6VE-B.....1966-68
C6VE-D....1966-68

Compression ratio: .......10.25:1
Horsepower: .................340 @ 4600 RPM
Torque: .........................485 @ 2800 RPM

Well, it could be the 462MEL engine, or the 385 series 460ci. Both were powerful engines.
They changed from the 462 to the 460 in mid 1966, so you could have either one. That series of car is usually valued by collectors. If its a four door, which most of them were, then it has the suicide rear doors which I always liked.

Didn't mean to step on you, Chris. I was typing while you were posting. But that is the year they switched to the 460, so he might have either one.

Whatever the engine, if the body is in decent shape and its real cheap, I would grab it. Darn nice looking car, and much in demand.

I think i remember my buddy saying the 462 ran in until Mid 68 when they switched to the 460.

Haha no worries.

My buddy has a 66 and he gets people wanting to buy it werever he goes. I wanted one for the longest time. good lookin cars.

The only reason I said 66, was because my old boom truck is a 66, and I was trying to ID the motor in it a few years back.
During my research, I seem to remember that was the year they switched. We had a 74 with a 460 and it was a monster.
Huge car, darn fast off the line.

So, when I was checking on my truck, I was curious about the 460 and saw it was first put in Lincolns the same year my truck was built.

But, I've been fuzzy tonight, so I may be wrong.

BTW, my truck has a 330MD big block.
Not relevant, but I brought it up and wanted to finish the thought.

It's in pretty rough shape but does have the suicide doors. Only serious body damage is the passenger door was hit my something and the vinyl roof is rusted pretty bad. Looks complete, but hasn't been registered for 15 years. I'm going to try and pick it up for less than $500. Kinda hoping I can make it into cool sleeper, I just don't know much about fords.

Post some pics if you get it.
A rag top would have been more valuable, but harder to restore. I'm serious about the value.
A lot of people are looking for those years. You have seen the convertibles in dozens of movies.
Of course, none come to mind.

And I am now going to bed. I have been running on almost no sleep, and just went back and reread what I posted.

It makes no sense whatsoever. It was 1968 that they switched, why I got off on 66 I have no idea.
Especially since we were talking about a 68 to start with.
I did find out the year while researching my 66, but it was in 68 that they switched, so no excuses.

I am out of here. Maybe I can get it together tomorrow.

Its a hard top not a convertible, but the top is the vinyl covered metal, which is probably why it's rusted. Hasn't run in over 3 years as far as I can tell. It'll be long term project if the owner will let it go for what I want.

Went to look at it and found some "how to care for your overhauled engine" pamphlet. So what it has now may not be what it had before...
