im changing the plugs. so far 3 broke off clean in the middle. never saw that before. trucks seems to run good and all. just hard to start. thats why im putting in new plugs. second thing would be where did the tip go? cant be in there still. would think it would be a very small chance it went out the back....

what would cause this?? thanks

DO NOT RUN the engine now.
Those things are still in there.
Do a search, there is a tool that helps to get them out but you can also take the heads off.
:doah:
This happens because they were muchroomed and now they don't fit thru the hole, and they are brittle because the just swelled to the size they are so they break off and stay in the head.
If you run it they will get inside and beat on the piston, you might not break the engine but they will do damage in there.

just found starting fluid in the back of the truck
Well
I would open up the engine if I were you.
A magnet will not do anything with the glow plug pieces and if they used starting fluid they might have done real damage inside so now is your time to check things out.

no we are not going to take a look. as he said: i need the truck now. going to put the plugs in and runs it. i have a feeling this is not going to go well

I think running the truck is a BAD move. I replace all my GP on the M1009, had 2 that were hard to get out, but they came out whole. I was lucky.

That said, your friend maybe getting himself into a position to need another motor.

There is a good chance the chunks will ding up the tops of the pistons, then get spit out the exhaust...

If he doesn't care, why should you?

Pull the injectors on the holes that broke if ur lucky the pieces will still be in theprecups and easily removed with some needle nose pliers just a thought if ur friend hasn't started it already

My 6.2 in my plow truck decided to bust an Autolite glow plug in half one day when I was on my way to the landfill--it sounded like the crank snapped at first, scared the crap out of me--then it kept ticking like a bent pushrod or stuck valve after that, but it didn't skip ..I babied it 3 miles home, clattering all the way--when I got close to my house I decided it was time for it to "go or blow"--I dropped her in low and floored it several times, till it redlined the govenor..almost immediately it got quieter instead of greanading like I thought it would..

The glow plug was missing half of its heating element when I removed it...(note to other diesel fans,do NOT mix different brands of glow plugs!--I had 6 AC 60G's in the other cylinders, when I found a dead one in the second cylinder from the front on the drivers side ,I figured it would be fine to put one Autolite 1110 from a parts engine I had in it to get me by)...evidently the Autolite didn't like being hooked to a manual button, and I suspect it may have drawn more amps thatn all the other AC glow plugs ,due to having different resistance?..anyway,my engine still runs, but every time I start it cold it sounds like its got loose rod bearings and there is a noticeable valve clatter that wont go away until its thouroghly warmed up now....that chunk of glow plug didn't do it any justice probably...I imagine the piston is beat up good and a valve might have gotten bent,or maybe a push rod...I cant take off the valve cover without wrecking the rusty injector lines,so I'm just going to run it until it blows up if thats what it feels like doing...rest of the truck isn't really worth doing an engine swap anymore either..:(

I like diesels to a point, but two things I hate about them are glow plugs, and the fact they are so costly and often refuse to come OUT...and injector pumps being so expensive..with the price of fuel lately I'd be happier with a small or big block gas engine ...why I bought a Suburban with another 6.2 I dont really know, other than the fact I got it cheap and if nothing else it'll mae a good replacement for my plow truck or a parts donor...

does not matter to me one bit. his truck not mine.. he drove it out of my place the late last night.

ac 60s are good plugs from what i know... was told the ends dont mushroom either. the wellmans 070 for cucvs. read they dont mushroom either but they do!

I bought a set of AC 60g's at Autozone a few years ago--when I went to use them,I found one WEllman glow plug in the AC box!..I took it back and exchanged it for another 60g,I didn't want one "oddball" in my engine after what happened when I tried using that one Autolite one..I'd never use another Autolite again after my experience with them and I've read about others horror stories online who have used them, and Champoins too..I have quite a few old 9g AC glow plugs from used engines but I'll never use them either, they'll mushroom for sure!-I have one mushroomed original glow plug that refuses to come out in my engine already, thats enough!...
