older mercedes (car) diesels???

I can get a wreaked (rearended) 1986ish mercedes turbo diesel car with 54k on the ticker. $100, I bet I can make money on it parting it out BUT I was wondering if the diesel engine would be viable in a truck? I belive they are a lighter diesel engine and he thinks its a inline 6 config. but no idea on the displacemnet. It was his grandfathers car, before he passed away. Its been sitting a while, but he dont know how long, or much about the car.

Do any of you know much about them?

I know if you brew corn diesel, you can get 30 mpg. If you don't, scrap is $100/ton.
 
Seriously, I don't think they have to poop to push a K5, maybe a smaller vehicle like a yeep or stripped down unit like a truggy.

Get the used french fries fat you get it free and get 10% lower mileage than reg diesel and all you have to do is strain it! Did I mention it is FREE!

* I base this off Myth Busters running a Mercedes on it.
 
The only real issue is that it is not EPA approved, ie fuel violation, and it is tax evasion unless you do paperwork.

Nice save on throwing the busters under the bus. Wouldn't expect an ex-constable to do such a thing...
 
Im not sure on horsee power but a buddy in highschool had one for a few years. It moved itself pretty damn good. If your gonna part it out im sure some interior peices grill and other stuff is work some good money. I remember when Calvin had to get brake rotos for it it was well over 200
 
I'm guessing the Mercedes wouldn't be very cost effective. Probably have to do a lot of fabbing to get it to fit and the power might be on the light side as mentioned.

This is the first I've heard about EPA & Tax Evasion problems for SVO / WVO. With kits all over the place and businesses that will do the conversion for you I'm surprised this is an issue.

Have any links that discuss these specific issues?
 
Some researching gave me a little info.

86 got a new 148-horsepower, 3.0-liter turbodiesel straight six.
300TD sedan (most comon diesel) weighed in at 3880lbs.
The 300E (gas version) could go 0-60 in 8 seconds. The only thing it says about the TD is that it was slightly faster due to better tourque.


I cant find much info on them.

First off there is no law that I know of that says you can't make your own fuel. The law is if you use the vehicle on the road you have to pay a highway use tax. Equipment used for farming and off highway use ie Building roads and infrastructures DO NOT PAY the tax on fuel oil. :wink1:

Second I was backing up my information as to the source of where I got it from. Unlike some who spout information and do not state where they got it. If I would of not said that you would of probably cried BS on it. :doah:

Q. I made biodiesel (B100) at home, and want to put it into my vehicle. Do I have to pay a tax? Yes. The User/Operator of the vehicle is liable for the $0.244 per gallon federal tax when put into the fuel supply. The Excise Tax form can be found here: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f637.pdf. Sales of biodiesel follow the same guidelines.

Whatever Im sure none of you can find much more info than I did. 3.0L and 148hp dont sound like much. I wish I could find the TQ numbers that would be helpful. As mentioned before, it probably would do great in a light heep or buggy.

Sorry if this is a stupid thread, also I know there is a diesel forum. I posted here cuz I figured some of you may have had one or known someone who did. Basicaly to get a broader responce.

Mods, this can be moved to the diesel forum, perhaps theres more info to be had there.

148 hp doesn't sound too bad. Doesn't the 6.2 have 165ish? Being turbo and all, I would expect torque numbers in the 300 range.

Just a thought, but with this little info, it makes me wonder what the bellhousing would look like. Im pretty sure the G-wagons used a buick v8 or at least it was designed after one. BOP bellhousing pattern would make it an easy swap to many of our applications. I would bet the 3.0 would weigh alot less than the 6.2/6.5. Less weight would make for more seat of the pants power, aside from a lower Hp number that is.

Definatly something to consiter buying and keeping around, just in case.

Edit: the dude is suposed to find out for sure what it is sometime this week and get back to me. So waiting on that b4 I make up my mind.
 
About 2 years ago I started collecting parts for a new project I am starting and one of the things i wanted to do was go with a small diesal [so i could run waste veg oil] at the time a good friend had 2 mercades both with diesals both early 8o's both with over 200k on the ticker and these big cars would fly . I loved everything about the ENGINE but I wanted a stick shift there was no way i was going to run one of there auto trans, rebuilds on them is over 2000 and with the a mount of water I run in auto trans failure is a comin thing. If I could have found info on a stick set up or adapting one I would have run it evan if I had to use a devorcied case. I think you would have no proplem running one in a full size with enough gear.
