So im driving down the street and i notice a whinning from the rearend when i take my foot off the gas. It seems to only whine when my foot is off the pedal. I take it to the mechanic. I explain to him what the problem is. Without looking at it he tells me he thinks its the carrier bearing and quotes me that it will be around 550 to 600 bucks. He says if i drop it off in the morning he should have it done by the afternoon. Something sounds fishing so i look at it myself. I have never replaced diff parts other than axles but im pretty mechanically inclined.

Carrier bearings look fine but the pinion bearing looks suspicious. Maybe the preload has come loose???

The pinion seemse to have some play in it. Not to mention the yoke seal is leaking. Im going to take it off and check it out.

Does anyone have advice on other things that should be changed??
I dont' have an open credit card but i can do some extras to it. I am on a student budget.

New carrier bearing??
Axles???
New axle bearings and seals???
Anyone recommend a diff cover thats not a cagillion dollars???
What about preferences of diff oil regular or synthetic???

Thanks everyone.

In and out play, or left and right play as in turning it?

If the pinion bearings went, the carrier bearings or the crush sleeve, then there is a chance that the ring and pinion could be on their way out too. Usually the bearings don't just fail, they need a shock load (which mostly hurts the R&P) or be run low on oil. If the seal is leaking, then this could be the reason they went. If you pull the yoke off, you'll need to replace the crush sleeve if you plan on putting it back together without rebuilding.

But a cheaper option and easier would be to find a new rearend to swap in. Lots of 10/12 bolts floating around. Should be able to find one for the cost of the bearing kit.

I'm assuming you checked the u-joints too, since this could also cause a noise, but you'd probably be getting some vibes too.

If there is any in/out or side to side play in the pinion then the pinion bearings are toast and that's your problem.

If money is a concern, find another 10 bolt rear end and swap it with yours (make sure they have the same gear ratio). Should cost $0-100.

..

Im not sure of the tolerances in the rear end but from the looks of everything else it looks like the pinion bearing shouldn't have a whole lot of play in any direction. It has a small amount of play in/out and side to side. I have to finish taking it apart and we'll go from there.

I do have a 12 bolt rearend from a full size chevy that i could put in there but im not sure of the length. I'll have to check on that too.
