OK guys...

well a guy was helping me with my engine, but unfortunately he only helped me long enough to pull the front serpetine off, and the timing cover. with this being my first engine rebuild I think I'm gonna have fun figuring those 2 out...

anyway, there is a bracket that gets bolted on with the timing cover to show you where the timing is... I'm not sure exactly where to bolt this, and my manual doesn't have any good pictures. I am wondering if anybody can give me a pic or explain what bolts this should be mounted up with...

also, what kinda timing gun should I get to adjust the timing, and how do I disconnect the computer so I can adjust the timing when the time come???

im in the process of retiming my truck,that little indicator usually bolts up to your cam cover bolts, any timing gun should do really, i got one for 40 bux and it works great, it doesnt have a digital readout or anything, just flashes a light when cylinder one is fired, this might seem quite useless when trying to run the engine having this thing blinking, however what you need to do is have the key in and the electricity on, the slowly rotate ur engine to the exact timing you want, u can tell this usually by a mark on your harmonic balancer, when this mark lines up with the 0 on you degree indicator(the one you have yet to bolt on) that means you're at tdc, if you want to adjust ur timing to exactly 0, then leaving the crank in position there and then turn ur distributor until it fires the #1 cylinder, this is where your timing light comes in, it will light up when the cylinder is fired so u can time it exactly. sorry for the long post, i dont know if this is the right way, but from wat i've learned it seems pretty right to me.

I think I'm missing something in the post; why can't it go back together the way it came apart? It's been a while since I've had any motor apart that low, but I recall the timing guage being permenantly attached to the cover...

The computer connector is usually a brown wire with a black stripe, with a single core weatherpak connector broken out of the harness right around the brake booster (for easy access to disconnect it).

I'm not sure what I'd personally recommend as a timing gun. I use a Walmart $30 special, and it does the job. I'll buy a better one someday, but the walmart one did fine.

I was kinda wondering if I wouldn't need to get the balancer on first before I could figure out where that stupid thing would bolt up...

I'll have to look for that wire... I remember it being mentioned earlier, but couldn't find the post about the wire color or where it is at..

also the info on setting the TDC and firing for #1... I've got this figured out on how to set the distributor to fire #1, and have #1 already on TDC... I'm assuming I'm gonna have to advance this, and I'm thinkin for my elevation it should be around 11 deg. advanced.

I recall seeing some of the timing tabs being loose from the timing chain cover on some small blocks in the salvage yard. they attach using the timing chain covers bolts. Don't know what years, c.i., etc.

mine is an 89... yea it definately goes on with the timing cover bolts. I just gotta figure out what bolts in the timing cover it attatches to, but I'm assuming I can figure that out pretty easily when I get the harmonic balancer on.

Once you get the balancer on, the tab will be pretty easy to figure out - if you've still got #1 at TDC, the tab will be at "0".

oh... well I guess that makes sense... should be pretty easy to find and line up then!

(somebody warned me about the #1 and TDC and it has paid off a couple times...)

man I tell ya what I've got a ton of good info off this site through out this little project, and I would assume that it won't end here yet!

Only problem was the suction hose had collapsed - $1.50 worth of 5/8" water hose and all was well

I was beyond stoked - the local Maytag man quoted me $185 and change, said the pump was trashed. Somebody directed me to a "fix it yourself" link, and I quit having to do dishes by hand alot sooner

He probably would have - This guy has a really "beloved" reputation around here. Too bad there's no local TV station with the investigative reports - I could have got all new appliances out of him just by threatening to call them

It is hard for me to eplain what two hole to use Jeff, but let me know if you want me to take a pic tomarrow before I head into work. If it makes sense it should be the second two bolts to the cover's left

Actually mine is off on the cover's left side... It's a PIA to see, especialy w/ dirt and crude on it. I have to second Pug's method.... that way you can tell for sure and there is no risk of the covers being different. Never know if it is an aftermarket setup.
