So I still have this Cab and Chassis 14bff left over, and was talking with Brett (sweetk30) when I was in his neighborhood, about making a trailer build out of it. It is just an empty housing right now, but I still have the spindle hubs, bearings, and a rear cover for it. I can make plates to cover the pinion, and the axleshaft openings. I thought it would be cool/unique to use a 14bff to match the one in the IronMaiden.

My plans are to have it turn out something like this:

I would like it to be a spare parts/tools/supply hauler, as well as a place to sleep.

What things would you envision being a good addition. Keep in mind it will be about a 5x8 frame with a pullout for the bed.

This is goona be good! I will keep an eye on this for sure! Are you going to use this for camping, SHTF, camping type of trailer? Or maybe, tow it and park it while wheelin, carry a welder, spare parts type of trailer. Whatever, I like the idea already! Can't wait to see the progress!

That would be way cool. I would probably cut the bottom of the pumpkin off:D and weld that shut too. For two reasons clearnance is king and think of all the funny looks you would get

I have actually thought about doing somthing like this but I was going to use bedsides so it looks like a chevy pickup box but it would be totally custom inside and out with some sort of a pop out up camper type deal. Thought about using a truck camper like the suv tents that go on the ground but extend to the enclose the rear of the suv.

Anyway cool idea Dave I hope you do it

Beat me to it. Would be less diff fluid you'd have to put in the pumpkin to oil the hubs too. I'd love to have a trialer like your doing if I had endless resources. Always had a fondness for those little offroad trailers. Subscribed.

Well, obviously I still have a LOT to do to IronMaiden, but this is just coming to mind in the last couple months, and I want to start gathering parts (used camper parts and such) for the build, I'm sure it will be next year before I get to construction, but I thought I would throw my thoughts out there and see what thoughts you all have too. I'm not sure about cutting the bottom of the diff off though....part of my reasoning for using it is the look of the diff cover as an identifying connection to the truck. It is obviously strong enough to take a bashing, and with a pinion plate to cover that, there shouldn't be anything to hurt. I would cut off that big lower lip and smooth the casting like this:

I just say cut off the bottom to get the ???? looks from folks :D

I would imagine you would just pack the bearing like front ones and not use any diff fluid at all.

If you want to keep the look of the 14 bolt then do that, its not like you are going to be doing hardcore rockcrawling with a trailer behind..................................................or are you?

When the :zombie18: come and your trailer is hung up on that big ol diff you will have wish you listened LOL :D Going to be cool for sure but your not allowed to work on it till the maiden is done, NOW GET TO IT

I have a small 4x8 trailer that has a 14b under it. The pumpkin was removed and only the tubes and hubs/spindles were used.

X3 My buddy has a few broken 14 bolt axle shafts that I plan to use for my covers and drill and tap for zerks.

I orignally removed the hubs but the studs need the thickness of the brake rotor so I pulled out the plasma:D

I haven't welded my spring pearches yet and may rotate my diff for a really flat bottom with the cover pointing straight down but not real sure on that yet, it's not real necessary for what I plan to use the trailer for.

Those tires are not the ones I'll be running, plan on running stock cucv wheels with stock 235/85r16s

Any way I did this beacuse the orignal axle didn't have a spare and was having a hard time locating one plus the trailer sat to high and still does with the 315s that's why I'm gonna run stockers. When my Blazer is finished I may run some 315s on the trailer for the extra height and looks:waytogo:

A few more.

I also plan on machining a plug for the axle tube so that when the grease gets hot it won't run down the tube and so that I can fill it with the zerk.

I planned on doing the same thing with a 14b and a trailer but was planning to get a 14b with the same gearing as the one in my truck. Then lube up the insides to prevent rusting, grease up the hubs real good and just seal it up nice and tight. That way if anything blows on the truck i have all the parts i need to rebuild the rear end sitting under my trailer (save on the storage space).
pull - install - go
But then again if i was doing it all from scratch id set the spring perchs on my trailer the same witdth as the blazer, then i have the option of swappinig the whole axle out if i need to.

either way im interested ot see how this one works out.

Sir yes Sir.

Seriously, I've been unfocused on the IronMaiden since May.....and also the Vette. I really was hoping I would have that running for this summer, now its almost over.
I've been trying to enjoy summer with vacations, spend time with my grandaughter, help the kids, and so much more that is just "life" in the summer, I've hardly opened the door to the shop, some of it is poor excuses too, but I need a good kick in the as s to get focused again, and block out most of the distractions.

put the same axles your K5 uses in the trailer for spares. not likely to ever break one, but you do have a strong big block. never know.

David, that front pinion cover is what I had in mind, and the plug you speak of for the axle tubes, that will have to be a custom thing right.

Do you think you could run an axleshaft without support at the splined end though. I don't plan on having any diff in it, just an empty housing.

Yeah but there's no reason you couldn't cut one out with a tourch or somthing and just silicone it in place cause it ain't going anywhere.
