i laid my 86 on its side wheeling. the hood drivers front fender and the door are shot but thats a bolt on fix. my roof rack pushed the roof of the cab in over the drivers head up by the windshield and made it to the windshield frame.. also pushed in at the top of the door about 3/4 of an inch . would i be better off using a junkyard cab or is what i did fixable?

i know the picture of the roof is crappy ill take better pictures tomorrow. and i definantly dont wanna chop the top on this one

From what I see it's fixable. I just went through this. We just used a port a pull and a come a long.

Can we say CK5 calendar..:D
Your rig still looks great too!

yeh its a offroad wekend toy with the exception of while capable its gotta be street legal. the club im in requires us to drive together on the road and not use allout trail rigs. cause trust me if i didnt love driving it on the street she would already have been cut and the rollcage welded in and done. but its gotta be legal to drive in Ga on the roads and while yeah its my fault for wheeling a truck i drive on the street i still wanna fix it back the correct factory look

she was a good looking rig before this afternoon lol damn makes me mad that i worked on it so much and flopped it. we shall fix it. the question is how and what do i need to do lol

Looks like you can get away with just a fender, hood, headlight bezel, and a door. The roof doesnt, from the pic, look like it tore up the window frame to bad. We did something similar to that way back when I was young. We just sat on the seats and kicked the roof back into shape :haha: and just got a new windshield and set it in a thick bead of caulk and tooled it to make it look like a seal. Now I know the wonders of a portapull and come along.

And I feel ya on the wanting to keep it decent looking for the street and all. I personally dont like the bashed in look. Mines strictly a wheeler that I do drive occasionally out and about, and I like it looking good. Scratches dont bother me, but wrinkled sheetmetal does, I already had my bashed in wheeler, so now I like a nice looking one to impress wimmins. :woot:

im a mechanic but never learned body work. how would i go about properly using a hydraulic porta pull becasue we actually have one at my best friends house for body work. we just dont exactly know how to use it

Set the base on something solid, like a good area on the floor pan, I always use a plate of steel or a piece of wood to spread the load, and the other end just pushes. Basically like a jack.

hmm what we have is some sort of puller then. it dont push i dont think. how hard is it to get everythign to line back up the way it was before?

To be honest, you will probably never get it "straight" again. Metal likes to shrink and expand when its taken a hit like that. You could work tireless hours on getting it right if thats what you want, or you can just get it to take the window, and seal out the elements and call it gravy.

i can pick a cab up for 300 bucks thats rust free with good doors plus i can get a front clip cheap too at the local j yard. i guess id have to pull my wiring harness and all or get a painless kit and rewire the new body and drop it on my frame. just thinking about it it might be less hassle to swap bodies. i wouldnt have to modify my frame or pull motors just unbolt it just like you would for a body lift

I had an 80 and thats what I ended up doing to it. I went to a 90 with power everything and TBI. And never looked back.

I have a Suburban, but it wasnt bad to swap the bodies, took about a weekend between the wiring, I grinded down and coated the frame and did poly bushings while I was there, and some undercoating on the body while it was on a lift. It will be more of a hassle without a lift, as the bodies aint exactly light. 5 guys can put on a pickup cab pretty easy, but a Blazer tub obviously weighs a bit more.

yeah i was kinda thinking get it loose support it on blocks ease the frame down lower by letting the air out of the swampers and then putting stock steel rims on it and rolling the thing out from under the cab the motor will clear if i take the front clip off. the the new body ill have to figure out how to get it up in the air and supported to slide the old frame under the new body. andbody know the laws on swapping cabs? hows that work as far as registering the truck next time it needs tags? i just put the old dash in the new cab? cause the junkyard ones they unbolt the dash and leave it out its just a stripped bare hull

Ehhhh, the tag technically stays on the vehicle after the dash is removed. Its rivited on to the metal underlayment dash support thing from the factory. You could swap the vin tags from your old shell into the new one, not really supposed to but ya know...... But you have to be very careful when you do that, if the vin tag shows any signs of tampering you will be pulled outa the truck for questioning. So easy does it with the drill bit. Problem with that is then you have a non titled shell afterwards, and yards around here want a title for a vehicle before they take it. We have to cut them into pieces and bring them in in sections and then its no worries.

Mines got 11in of lift, and 40s, and its registered as a 90 2wd 1/2ton. :haha:

how does the junkyard sell the cabs to us? i was undewr the impression that once a vehicle is accepted to a junbkyard then the vin is reported to the state as a dismantled vehicle and it cant be registered. so how do people go about buying new cabs?

That is correct, but the VIN tag is still located in the truck. People just drill them out and put one from their truck on it instead. Therefor its your VIN from your driver but installed on a different cab. Keep in mind this isnt legal and in most states is a felony. I have done it several times in my youth with cars and trucks for various reasons. But now I dont mess with it as I dont need the trouble.

Around here the junkyards cant sell you a complete cab. They must cut it in half somewhere. Like for example with a blazer they cut the bed and roof off and separate it, so you cant just bolt it on and go. Thats how they get around selling the cab, as its for restoring a damaged one and not to be drove. Funny thing is, they will cut it in half, and you can buy both halves.

Your best bet, would be either fixing it, or buying a privately owned Blazer and doing the swap that way, the chances of you actually getting caught with the VIN tags switched is about less than nil, but it can and does happen.
