Opinions needed on new truck options (Got one!)

Yukon club w/quadrasteer. You get the 6.0, and easy for her to park. My wife dd's hers. I love it, holds the family, junk, and toes.

Wow, there's a rare rig to try and find. Not a bad option, but i'm afraid of lifespan of the quadrasteer parts, as it was a rare setup, and would hate to have issues with it.

Really, the 2000+ Burb/Yukon XL handle well, and park way smaller than they seem like they should.

Why the need for a CC or burb? Just wondering why an extended cab truck wouldn't work?

When looking into the "older" rigs that are cheaper, realize you have no idea how that transmission has been treated in terms of overheating, fluid changes, etc. My truck only cost me $2250....but within a couple years, it needed the 4l80e rebuilt. A good rebuild on that trans will run you about $2500, so keep that in mind.

I totally agree with you on this point. It pretty much goes with any used car/truck that you buy. There is always that chance that your going to get one that has been abused or not taken care of, so I kind of factor that in to the cost in the long run.

And dfl701...an extended cab would work. It's just that I have always grown up with 4 doors and really like the convenience of having them. I am almost always the designated driver for trips to the mountains, desert, Vegas or wherever. Plus I have a rather large dog that really does not like the smaller back seats! (he is bigger now then in the little picture)

By the way, how the heck do I double quote in my replies?

do you see the little button between quote and quick reply?

click that then you select the other quote you want to double quote

Josh, did you have an idea of price range?

If I were to look for a tow rig I would look at the Excursion with a diesel. Let me see what i can find. Stay tuned.

Hey Hoby, Originally I didn't have a price range since I was going to split the cost with my girl and she would drive it. But the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of an older (1996-1999) Suburban with the 7.4. They are anywhere from $4,000 to $7,000, from what I have seen so far. That is a dirt cheap payment and then I could just drive that as my DD when its cold and/or rainy and I don't want to drive the leaky Blazer. Plus, when the new motor is finally finished :D for the Blazer, having an extra car means I won't have to wake up the whole neighborhood at 5am.

Ok, so after several long talks with some friends and the girlfriend I am going to start looking for a 2000-2002 Ford F250. It will have the nice 7.3 Power Stroke diesel for the pulling power and longevity. Going to get the crew cab shortbed 4x4. I have already found a few around me but I just need to decide now how much I really want to spend on it and how many miles are too many miles? Also, don't want one that is already lifted with big tires on it. A total stock truck would be sweet! But we will see.

Sorry to you guys for getting a Ford, but its my money and truck right?
Let you guys know what I get when it happens.

dont know if it makes a difference or not, but the superduty started in 99 not 00. so you might be able to find something a lil cheaper. dont want you to pass on an option because of that so thoguth i'd thro it out there.

those 7.3s are dead nuts reliable tho. i have a buddy shopping for one now. and another buddy that bought one with 300k, and has driven it like a high school kid everyday for the past 3 years. no problems.

the only reason i went with cummins over the ford was you get the reliability with more speed/power. but for your needs should work great adn be way more comfy/roomy.

Thanks Mr. Hippie, I forgot about the 1999 SD. I have a habit of not buying the first year anything came out, for some reason I feel they have more bugs that need to be worked out? Good to know about your buddies truck, he bought it with 300K on it? Damn, I was worried about 150K

The only things about the Dodge were they didn't have the crew cab option back then (right?) and I have heard bad things about the transmissions holding up.

i hear you on the first year thing. i'm usually to much of a cheapass to let that stop me tho! lol.
yeah, he bought it. flogged it, gave it to his younger brother and bought an 02(first one was a 99). so its still in the family getting abused. lol

yeah, in 98 they came out with opening suicide back doors on a ex cab, in 03 they came out with the full opening rear doors on the ex cab. then in 06 they came out with the mega cab.
the autos def dont hold up to much abuse stock. my 02 was a 6 speed, so i just threw a clutch in and called it a day. i just liked it cuz with a programmer and small injectors i put down 435hp, my buddys new 7.3 has a bunch of work including a new turbo and still couldnt hold a torch to my dodge. but its way more comfortable, and roomy.

just be prepared that if you do anything to the ford (programmers, injectors) you might have to think bout tranny upgrades too. stock for stock, they're stronger then dodge, but will still fail if too much power is added.

oh. the other thing is buy soon, cuz damn diesel truck prices are on the rise in a big way since fuel has been so cheap.

Thanks again buddy! 2006 is way too new for me to get the dodge with the four doors. I don't think I could handle the smaller backseat on the earlier models.

I hear you on the transmission comparison and the upgrades. I just plan on doing the exhaust, a programmer and air intake. Just the basics to help it breathe a bit better and help out the mileage too. Only going to use it to actually tow maybe 5 times a year?, and its mostly on the flat freeways out here in Cali. But I will for sure keep tranny mods in mind for the future.

I know I said I didn't want a lifted one, but for poops and giggles, what you think about this:

http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/ctd/1886380109.html

its definitely in my price range.

i like it lol. but i havent had a truck since last august so i'd take a damn volkswagon pup right now if it had a lil diesel in it! lol
looks ok to me tho.

i dont know too much about the fords weak links. but i'd think with 200k, the stock tranny would need atleast a rebuild, especialy if your gonna tow. who knows how much weight its had before or if it was hotrodded. thats the problem with getting things from a lot where you cant grill the PO. good price tho, most of the ones in bay area have been haning close to 17k-ish

I don't think you can find one with 'too many miles', you just need to be looking at what issues those trucks have. Cooling systems are usually on the menu.

For what it's worth I think you are making the right choice :D

Nice setup fixer, wish I could afford a new truck but oh well. And Hippie, yeah, I agree, I will have to set aside money for the transmission when it takes a dump. But that comes with the territory, whether I get a Ford, Chevy or Dodge with that many miles on it.

if you were closer id suggest my brothers f250, bullet proof upgraded trans turbos controller etc. Its a beast! hes asking 12.500 but im not sure mileage or specifics of whats been done.

Screw closer. If its the right truck, for a good price, with a good known history, i'd like to think it might be worth the $1000 in flight and diesel to go grab it!

Always worth considering.

Also, shipping may only be 5-600$.

Appreciate the offer guys, but that would be a long ways away for me to go look at and a huge chance at that. Plus, us guys in CA have to get the diesels smog checked every two years now :eek1: So if has lots of motor upgrades I wouldn't want to chance it.

Not to mention. Bringing a truck in that was purchased out of state is a few grand. They hiked up all the fees

Me too lol

That is my buddies F250. They really are the best option for towing.
