Eventually I'll have dual Optimas too. I will probably be going with the red tops (I've already got one and havent had a single problem with it). I've heard of quite a few people having problems with the yellow tops being used as a starter battery.
I have dual yellow tops. Only been in the truck about a year and a half. No problems at all. Plenty of power for anything. Rob 85K5 has been running a yellow top for at least a few years no problems either.

One thing I have noticed was the yellow tops seem to hold a surface charge longer when I shut the motor off. I have an LED light on the dash showing the charge. The old batteries (which were new 1000 amp batteries from Wally World (Walmart)) would loose the surface charge in a matter of seconds. The light stays on now for a minute or two.

I have a red for starting and yellow for winch and accessory stuff. Reason is the red is better for starting, the yellow holds charge for a long time so is suited to use as aux battery. Also using an isolator and high amp alternator.
I think they run about $110 each. You can get them at autozone - just make sure they are fresh.

sams club has them cheap in their auto dept cheapest i have found yet
at advance auto i think they are $109 for red and $169 for yellow
I have a red and yellow too, you can run your cd changer all weekend before you need a jump...All weekend...

I have one of the BIG yellow tops. I dont remember the exact group number but it has 900 cranking amps and the cells on it are staggered instead of lined up normaly. I had to special order it from Jegs and it was on backorder for 3 months till I got it.
I bought one of the first series of red tops to come out almost ten years ago, It's an 800cca battery, I recently tested it @723cca. I think this battery is going to last forever! truly amazing!cegusman said:

I would do two yellowtops on a truck ment for mostly offroad. 2 reds wouldn't be terrible either though. 1 redtop had gotten my K5 by for years now with no problems. The only time it won't keep up is LONG pulls with my Warn 12K. I only have an 80 amp alternator though which doesn't help its case any.

My red red top had been going solo up until 2 years ago when I got a dual batt. isolator. It did o.k. with light, short winching, but now it has a 600cca A/C Delco to help it out. In my personal opinion, If you are running dual batteries, I would not spend the extra money for a deep cycle aux batt. regular batteries will work fine.Hossbaby50 said:
