Ordering my new tow rig this month

RJFGuitar,

Think what you want. The generation of trucks didn't change because the Diesel engine option changed. It's the same truck.

fordcummins people, that's great, but i'm not converting a new truck. I want a new truck for once.

Yea I think the powerjoke is a piece of crap. I know of too many of them in and out of the shop.

If I could order a new fully custom built truck, it would have a dodge cummins drivetrain with a chevy body on top of it. I have a dodge CTD and I think the body and interior is junk. I love the cummins and the drivetrain, but thats the only reason I bought it. The cummins will pull any thing you can hook to.

In a sence they are the same trucks but they are just like the blazers....comparing a '96 dodge CTD to an '01.5 is like comparing an '83K5 to a '90K5. Tons of things have been changed in and out to make it a much better truck while retaining the same chassis. Keep reading up on 94+ dodge CTD's and you will see. I have been into dodges a lot longer than you have.

You guys are truely unbelievable. It's amazing that this is a truck board in a technical forum and all you guys want to do is take cheap jabs.
I was hoping I could find a crying smilie for ya Tim! I think Mr. Fox needs to add that just for you.

.
Don't complain, we learned all the cheap, negative jabering from the master of negativity. :p:

It's cool, whatever. :D

I was just hoping with all these guys pimping their bling with new Dodges here someone would have something to say.

Ah the Cummins 600 or 610. You will like it. Get the wheel well covers, they are an option believe it or not.

3.73's are good. I run 1900-2000 RPM at 70mph.

Since I reflashed the ECM a few weeks ago, I get 15 in the city, 17.3 in the rolling hills, and I havent been on the interstate yet. I also havent towed much with it since the re-flash. I have the 48re. My truck is 11 months old with a tad under 32K and I have only had one problem. Torn weather stripping at the door near the A-pillar. Enjoy your new truck.

Oh and as for getting a 4x4. I wouldn't have it any other way. Any time I get in the slightest of slippery dirt, my truck slides all over the place with the power of the engine. If it's soft and mucky, I would be stuck because of the weight of the CTD up front. When I back up to my trailer in these conditions, I have to use 4wd just so I don't slide all over the place. I couldn't get the trailers out of the field with out it.

I'll chime in on a little new truck BS. :)

Nonesuch,
I get about the same as you. 15-16 in town, 17 towing in direct drive, and I get about 22 on the highway at 70. I am turning about 100 RPM's less than you since I have the 3.54's.

Tim,
You will like the new truck, One of my favorite things about eh 3rd gen cummins trucks is the fold out towing mirrors. That is the best mirror design I think I have ever seen on a pickup. They look very good folded in and are plenty large enough to actually be usefull(unlike the late 90's chevies). THey look very nice and "beefy" too. The nice part about them on the 3rd gens is they are power mirrors, with the 2nd gens like mine they were an option but non power, only the smaller mirrors were power(which is what I have). I also like the look of the short box crew cabs, the SB quad cab 2nd gens are a little too short for my taste. The 3rd gen back seat and door seems to add just enough wheel base. I am still not sure if I like my front clip or the new front clip better, regardless they both have to be the sport version for me, I don't like the big chrome front ends. You will like the NV5600, it shifts smooth, tight, and fast for what it is. It feels like a lot tighter box than the nv4500 in our C30 Chevy dually. THe gears are really close together. When I test drove an '03 I stuffed it in 4th instead of going into second the first couple of times because I was used to the 4500 and the gears being farther apart. :o

I am disapointed with a couple of things:
1) I don't like the interior in the 3rd gens, the white guages are cool but I really like my interior in my 2nd gen '01.5 a lot better.
2. I am not sure if it's a good thing or not that the new rigs have AAM axles instead of Dana axles.
3) THE QUIET CUMMINS! I am definantly not a fan of that multi stage injection deal at idle to reduce noise. I like it when I pull up to a Ford or CHevy diesel and all they can hear is cummins next to them. The cummins has that legendary sound, It is fairly loud but it does sound a lot better than the PS or DMax IMHO.
