may I say, someone please measure an impact socket... Not quite sure where Kert is going with this but I personally hate when I can't get my Impact sockets into a rim.

I lost my caliper set in the abyss of my garage so you will have to settle for a swag measurement here.
My 7/8" Deep impact socket has an OD of just a hair under 1 1/4"

Inch and a quarter for a 1/2 ton lug nut... it says 7/16s on the side of it

damn I need to organize my tools sad when I start to post at 1015...look for a tape measurer till 1/4 till 11...doh
