i have a 1980 blazer with the 3 speed automatic and i was wondering if i could switch it out to one of the newer trannys with over drive? If so, which years? thank you

Yes you can switch to a 700R4 which has OD. I think any of the years after 84 are good. You will need an adaptor between the tranny and T-case. I am not sure if you need driveshaft mods or not. Someone will correct me if I messed anything up.

Try to find a tranny out of an 89 or newer truck those are the best years of the 700r4/4L60. They had all the factory upgrades and are the strongest most dpendable units.
Heres some info on how to Id those years:700r4/4L60 trans ID

Okay my .2 cents, If you are planning on running bigger tires be ready to have to do gears. The 700 doesn't like running stock gears and big tires in OD. If you change it ,yes you will need to move the crossmember back about 2 inches, due to the 700 being longer. Your shafts I am not sure about. I have a 700 and 4" of lift and no problems on mine.
