Overheated my 4L80E on the way to Moab.

Well, she's dead.

We tried to run up to Fins n things this afternoon and daisy wouldn't even pull the hill up to the trailhead. Trans temp went from 175 to 240 in less than a mile, it literally would not drive up the hill. First gear, full throttle, barely moving. The oil is worse looking than yesterday and smells burnt. It gets up over 200* just running around town at 35mph. (With the cooler fan running full time.)

Moab 4x4 outpost ordered me a trans, it won't be here til Monday.

Damn dude that sucks. Sorry to hear that.

It sure does. Especially considering I lost my job last week. This wouldn't be such a big deal if we were at home. Drop it off, pick it up the next day. 750mi from home, it really sucks, we'll have to stay one extra night. This is going to just about max out a credit card.

That sucks man! Hopefully the trans and service are less than you are expecting. Good luck.

sorry to hear that. my tranny died about 4 weeks ago, luckily I made it home. Been saving our pennies, a manual swap is looking better & better.

of the aftermarket controller units out there I seem to recall tci as problems . . . people not happy with them .

sorry for the trans d.o.a problem . . hope they don't gouge you on prices .

I've ever been totally happy with it but it's gone 27,000 mi without any real issue. I'd have a hard time trying to pin this on the controller.

Dam Scott sorry to hear man, try to get that cooler out in front...my 99 got warm (220) when I towed the Maiden out in 2011, we pulled over and let it cool off a bit and carried on. This with the factory auxiliary cooler in front. It only happened on the big climb out of Rifle headed north.
I pull the pan plug every year and change the 4 qts it has. I got 240k on it and it still performs great!
I had a 4L60e fail on me in Custer ST park in SD a few years ago....I too was at their mercy, but felt I was treated fair @ 1700 for an off the shelf rebuilt/upgrade like for like replacement. I have a felling you'll be in for about 2500 for the 4L80.

Meh, its only money. Look on the bright side. You are in a beautiful place with friends and family. Im stuck in vegas giving half my paycheck to an ex and her lawyer. Lol! I am living vicariously through all of you and the awesome pictures y'all keep posting.
Have a great time and enjoy it. Plus you get a new trans. :saweet:

Probably yeah, the trans is by itself was $1800. Install will be another few hundred. A few guys here in town have offered to help but the trans won't be in til Monday and most everyone is leaving that morning.

I think I'll grab a cooler at a local parts store and add one out front for the drive home. I don't care if it's zip tied to the grille, haha!

That sucks man. I will say from my little experience with Moab 4x4 Outpost, they should do you right. Those guys impressed me when we were there in June.

Besides the money thing, it could be worse. At least you pulled out a second set of wheels with you. You can still go play and get your mind off of the trans issue for a little while. Have fun with the Yota, enjoy the area and all the like minded nutjobs you are out there with.

It has got to be stressful to be in the situation you are now...so far from home. Not doing the labor yourself is going to cost a lot of money. At least your tranny is going to be "good to go" for a long time to come now.

What do you have for a fan/shroud/clutch? Is the engine also getting warm? To get really hot, the trans lines are partially plugged, you don't have good airflow or the torque converter is never locking. A good controller should let you lock if you're not full throttle on a climb. Most of the heat from a trans is from the torque converter slip. Need to be sure the same problem doesn't bite a new trans. Hope you get it going great!

I got hosed at fremont gmc in riverton wyoming last month. 3800 for a 4l80e ($2750 for trans). Miss diagnosed. The range fork and hub in the tcase were damaged letting it pop out of gear under power making a loud bang. Spent another 200 on a used tcase and they swapped in the good parts and she was good to go. Still gets hotter than i'd like even with my lesson learned of putting a big ass cooler out front from uncle gm to help the trans cool in tandem with the cooler in the rad.

Scott, how did it all go? You back at home, all safe and sound?

Oh, and post pics of the Yota diff when you get it pulled.

The drive home went well, thanks! I left the TCI programmer plugged in to monitor temperature and drove accordingly. The big hills on I-70 warmed it up to 215* slowing us down to 35mph or so.
I never really meant for Daisy to be a tow rig and it shows when you start pulling hills. I dont think I'll drag the yota that far with her again, shorter trips/smaller hills are fine.

I definitely will post pics of the rear diff in the yota.
