Overland trip: CK5 wheels the UP 2016 (trip report and pictures going up!)

just give me a meeting point and a time frame for Wed afternoon....I'll be in St. Ignace Tues night.

Same here. If you're leaving St. Ignace Wednesday morning, we'll have about a 3 hour head start on ya. Super easy to meet up anywhere West of Munising or Marquette.

Do you have interest in touring one of the last copper mine shaft houses in the region? I'm thinking we may head up there on Wednesday if Luke doesn't have anything planned.

It's a short drive North of Adventure Mine. We could easily hit that (and several other things) and still have plenty of time to get to Adventure before nightfall.

Can you get a tour set up?

Tours are by appointment only (there are no regularly staffed hours), but this is what I was told this morning:

Ethan, I could do a tour at four on Wednesday the 17th. I work until three. I can see if anyone else could do it at another time. If you will be in the area Thursday or Friday I would be available after 1:30 on those days. My cell number is xxx-xxx-xxxx. Sherri Lewis

Any interest, guys?

I'm interestedoing- need to discuss with the co-pilot.

Not sure what we're doing yet, but I confirmed it's OK to camp at Adventure Wed night.

I'm in for that mine tour as well!
Making decent progress on the list....put the windows in the topper today.....that job sucks! Still not sure what to do about the rear window but I'll use a duct taped tarp if I need to.
I'm game for the mine tour, what time are you shooting for Ethan? I think I'll be about 5-6 hours depending on destination.
Got an addy for the mine?

Oddly, google shows an address of 2 2nd street Atlantic Mine, MI 49905. But it's not Atlantic Mine at all, it's 3 towns further South on M-26 - Painesdale. It looks like you can also use Hubbard Avenue, Atlantic Mine, MI 49905. Don't know what another GPS would say about those addresses, though. Coordinates are 47.03501, -88.67038

Champion #4 is in a little section of town down the hill from where M-26 rolls through Painesdale. Once you're in that section of the village you will surely see the headframe, but you can roll by on the highway and not see anything.

A few last minute suggestions:

For things you might wear a lot, like a hat, or around the entrance to your tent, this spray helps with bugs:

Don't forget to bring DEET for exposed skin:

Regarding "facilities", I'll just refer to this discussion: http://www.upoverland.org/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=451. It's good to take advantage of plumbing when possible, but sometimes that can be hours away (or the next day), so it's always good to be prepared. Not nice to leave white flowers in the woods for the next camper if you can avoid it.

If there's a trip like this next year I'll see what I can do, i failed to check the garage enough to see this thread until now:doah:

Request back from Painesdale:

"How many of you will be present for the tour? Also, we have no toilet facilities. Do you know where the mine-shaft is located?"

Headcount? Tour starts at 4pm EDT on Wednesday, 8/17.

Again...how long are you planning to be out of contact with the normal world? I had this impression that Dave would be stopping for fuel on a regular basis (daily? :dunno:). At a place with toilets.

I have a shovel, but maybe I'll grab a backup bucket, just in case.

I'm in for the mine tour @ 4!
I got a bucket dumper and a privacy popup
78K30 it will be cool to add more to the group!

If you show up at Adventure Mine and don't see any of us, here's a map. The campground is right on the main entrance road. If you go further back from the main road there are some more sheltered areas and at least one water spigot. You'll see the fire pit first thing. Porta-potty is normally over near the main office parking lot.

Yes, we'll pass through towns each day, but it may be only 1 chance for "facilities". I can't tell you what will work for you, just that it's good to be prepared in case nature has plans that don't match our itinerary. What else can I say?

That's fine. I'm just trying to gauge how adventurous other folks are feeling. There will be a learning curve for us, no doubt.

When ya gotta go, ya gotta go!
You guys got cb's?
Cuz I don't!
Luke thanks for the directions!

If you can borrow a CB it's nice for stuff like "gotta change a diaper", "look out for that big rock on the right" or "the log cabins on your right are part of historic Victoria village..."

I'll second this, we never used to run them in our trail rigs just the tow rigs. They're super handy to have on the trail, I've got like $60 into mine today including the antenna and an SWR meter to calibrate it

Stop by a truck stop and buy a magnetic antenna, and cheapy cobra. Should be about 50-60 bucks. You don't need huge throw on the trail.
