Overland trip: CK5 wheels the UP 2016 (trip report and pictures going up!)

When ya gotta go, ya gotta go!
You guys got cb's?
Cuz I don't!
Luke thanks for the directions!

I am a ham radio operator, but I don't have any CB equipment.

Comm. gear makes a difference, that is for sure.

Luke, what are you bringing? Radio gear is only useful if we all match.

I have a CB installed in the truck. Don't have anything else anymore except some FRS handhelds I never bring because they suck car-to-car.

Been taking things apart for days, so I got a lot crossed off my list today - front end put back together, new U-joints, brakes working right, front driveshaft back on, stereo and speedometer working, etc.

well done Luke, I got a notice today that my window weatherstrip kits wont arrive until "end of day Monday" so looks like I'll be putting the doors/windows together Tuesday morning after I get out of work, then if I feel up to it, I'll take off for St. Ignace.
Maybe I'll grab a CB and antennae and you guys can help me install it?

I think I have a K40 mag mount that just needs reassembly. Don't count on it until I report that it works and is packed, though. I think Wal-mart still stocks a radio. Craigslist could help if you can make the timing work.

Request back from Painesdale:

"How many of you will be present for the tour? Also, we have no toilet facilities. Do you know where the mine-shaft is located?"

Headcount? Tour starts at 4pm EDT on Wednesday, 8/17.
Have you given them a number? It'seems the 6 of us now and if anybody else wants in (like 5x5) they'll have to let us know.

Sounds like a fun trip. If I get my truck done by next year I'd love to go. 2 weeks ago we took the quads up there rode From Calumet all the way up to Copper harbor then back down the east side of the peninsula. I love that area up there. You guys gonna hit the Mt. Arvon area? We use to ride quads over there on memorial day weekend and would see a lot if trail rigs out. Lots of terrain in that area. Have fun guys

I found all the parts to the mag mount antenna and put it together. The cable is only about 7' long, but it should work. I also found a mirror mount, but it's just the bracket and U-bolts - there's no connector in it. I can throw in my SWR meter and we can test stuff at camp.

Want me to call this guy and try to pick this up tomorrow? http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/ele/5731190562.html

I'd throw $20 at a CB setup for this trip. Sure beats listening to radio silence the whole time.

If that guy responds and I can work it out, I'll grab that, but you know how Craigslist is. Don't give up pursuing other avenues.

I've looked in Kzoo area, and nothing worth jumping at, so if you think that's a good piece, I'm in for it!

Reminder to bring jackets for the underground tour - it's 48 degrees in there.

I acquired that unit today, and 2 mag mounts. Have one other lead, but the $36 Cobra at Wal-Mart doesn't sound too bad. 1 in Stock in Marquette, too.

needing a jacket sounds good.
thanks for grabbing that radio!
what do I need for install? a drill, maybe some screws?

The $20 CB needed some service but it is tested working now. It came mounted to a little console that sits on a hump and has a cigarette lighter plug so it can drop right in and run, but if you want something more off-road friendly think about what you can screw the bracket to. So with my rig + 1 more complete setup, I have 2 mag mounts left over. The only things I have real opportunity on are handheld units. These could be convenient but I don't have time to find adapters for external antennas, plus they both need power cords or they're on AA batteries.

I don't mind fixing old radios but with the lack of time I recommend Wal-mart for our 3rd radio.

EDIT: This CB is so old that it's JC Penny brand and only 23 channels.

The $35 one has a BNC antenna output. Should be a snap to get that adapted. I may have that adapter lying around. Radioshack would have it if I don't.

weatherstripping kits arrived today...got the pass door all done now, will probably nap for a couple hours when I get home from work in the am, then finish the drivers door, and look at the wiper motor and defroster to see whats up with them, then hit the road by 2pm for St. Ignace.

So I wouldn't mind investing in a new one for the a decent price! Walmart near me has these:...any recommended unit?
I generally don't like cheap crap, that is frustrating to use, so if I gotta spend a bit more I'm good with it!

My wheeling rig has a cheap uniden in it and performs excellently on the trail. My 2500HD has the cobra 29 LX in it and that's a wonderful unit, the weather function comes in handy on occasion.

I think there are good and bad ones at any price point, so you have to find reviews. Mine is a real simple unit I got from Amazon because everybody liked it. Only real feature is RF gain, which is nice when the other radio is right next to you. If I could add any feature, it would be scanning, but that's more for the road trip than the trail rides. All my extra CB stuff is loaded in the truck, so we'll try to get everybody on the air UP there. FYI, generally use channel 16.

I'll only have intermittent internet on my phone from here till next week, but I've sent the number to everyone attending. Texting is the most reliable communication in the boonies. Will be nice to sleep in the North woods tonight. See y'all tomorrow!
