Overland trip: CK5 wheels the UP 2016 (trip report and pictures going up!)

Also @campfire what time frame roughly? I know we're a little ways out yet but this gives me some time to put a loose plan for the year together.

Totally depends on input from folks interested in coming. I'm game for any time of year, this stuff is local for me. The mid-August timeframe is a pretty nice point where it is warm (but not hot), the mosquitoes are way down, and there are long stretches of non-rainy weather. Obviously we misguessed the weather last year, but it was clear and sunny the full week before and the full week after the trip. So I like that timeframe. Early Summer and Fall are rainy times along the coast, June is peak mosquito season, and July had Dunefest, so that's why we settled on August last year. This overlanding trip is patterned after the U.P. Overlanding trip that comes through here each summer (check out some sweet videos at https://upoverland.org/, you will see Luke's rig hiding among all the smaller rigs). Last year we mirrored some sections of their route. In fact, Luke had used the UPO trip (1st week of August) as scouting for our own trip (3rd week of August). And their sponsoring offroad shop (Roam Automotive) is where we wound up for Luke's "skid plate cleaning." So there is already some groundwork laid that Luke was able to take advantage of. Food for thought.

As of today, the schedule for UPO 2017 has not yet been announced.

My personal trump card: We're expecting a baby in May, so early summer plans will all be tentative. I'm not against taking a 9-day-old baby on a 3500-mile road trip, but only with the expectation that I might bail at any point along the route.

End of august would likely work best for me and you so some of the "newness" is worn off of the baby by the then! I'd rather not take the HD, it serves as a good backup for my other junk :o. The Jeep should be running in a couple weeks so it's also a possible contender. I would prefer something full-sized of the GM variety though.

I'm planning for 2018...I almost have enough parts to start modifying my burb. I'm also planning on taking my grandson along.

Well, end of August is getting pretty close to threshing time...

Hoping progress picks up on the truck. This would be a great trip after a few shake down runs.

Would be fun to see the UP on something besides my sled.

Kewaunee Area

Ok, we're further North and across the Bay, along the border land.

Lately I've been passing by Kewaunee on a weekly basis (as part of my job). Wouldn't be too hard to swing a meetup some time.

Also, you're close enough to make a trip up North whenever you have free time. On either side of the Bay.

Wouldn't be hard at all. Have family with places in Crivitz, Marinette and Antigo areas

Easy Peasy. I go through Marinette/Menominee on a daily basis. Just lemme know when you're in town. Crivitz happens occasionally. Antigo is a pass-through town for some of our expeditions.

Nice to find someone from the area, I'm not aware of any other CK5 folks in this corner of WI.

Hear you there. Most of the guys around me are either pullers or mudders. Nothing wrong with either but nothing around here for trails and technical stuff. It's a track or a mud hole in the corner of a field

Head North. You won't find much rock crawling, but there are plenty of forest trails out there. No need to get stuck in the corner of a field.

Have you seen my pictures from this trip? We had fun. It was neither hard-core nor boring, a nice middle-ground mix.

That exactly the kind of terrain I'm building mine for. Just have to get my butt in gear. Still have to get my third axle and second tranfer case mounted up....then driveshafts

It is getting close, but as I told dad we're getting the combine out mid summer so it's not a rush job in the last two weeks before harvest. If you set a date l do my absolute best to make it function.
