The clear coat on my truck has failed. Over Christmas I may either attempt to match the color or go with a flat black matte color. Note this is for the hood only. If it goes well I may tackle the roof.

Also note this work will be accomplished with a spray gun, not with a rattle can.
Random Thoughts and Questions:
  • Rough Cost for paint / clear coat if needed?
  • Resolvable time estimate? (it will be will be wet-sanded / ready for paint prior to the "paint-day")
Inputs are welcomed and suggested!

Paint match, I have flat black paint jobs.

Don't use flat black. If you want a matte use a satin. Looks a lot better in the long run.

I'm a cheap bastard and have a twisted sense of having to do everything myself. Buying another hood doesn't seem like the most ecnomincal route. As much as I like this truck. It has alot of miles 300k
Think best option for resale value within the next year. If I attempt a paint match, can a body shop provide the paint? I'm most definatly a noob when it comes to paint.

Fair enough... I’m going through the same thing with my daughters dodge. Want to replace the pass door with anouther one I got. Painted it with colour matched paint in a spray can... fail! It’s hard to get right.

Napa can mix paint. Its where I got the base-clear urethane for my pickup. I also did a Baja bug in a single stage from Napa. Not all stores mix paint but they should be able to order it from another store. The problem that you will run into is that your factory color will be faded. A perfect match will be difficult. Its not impossible but painting is a learned skill for sure, like welding. Anyone can do it, mastering it takes years.

I'd consider it but I'm guessing the freight costs would likely kill the deal

Surf craigslist. You should easily find a same color hood in good for shape. I got one in a matching blue for my 95 Chevy for 75 bucks.

Indeed - have been - nothing has popped up as up late.. Mine is an '01. Will diesels from the same era also make a suitable candidate?

Gray primer, flat black, and PlastiDip are for those who can't afford paint. I say go for paint, call me old-fashioned but there's something about a lustrous paint job that just shits all over matte/flat.

I don't necessarily agree with you on this, some satin paint jobs are awesome but, this one is not a good candidate for the satin or matte finish.
I agree with the used hood as a better chance to match
