I recently tried changing out my pan gasket and believe that my oil pan itself has some personal vendetta or vengance against me. Lol after all day and the one piece gasket,cleaning the pan etc etc, I just want to get a new pan.Im looking for something sturdier that I don't have to worry about it bending out of shape. Withought breaking the bank simply, what's a good,affordable solid all around pan?thanks all !:thumb:
 
Stay away from anything chrome, or Mr gasket.

A friend had the baffle get wedged between a rod and the side of the block after the welds on the front of the baffle broke.

Straiten out the pan rails, and make sure everything is square, is all I can suggest.
 
As much as I would love to just hammer out the pan as sugested,and try it over again,the pan has these grooves all along the rails, and corners, mabey they put them there for added suport, I don't know. Has anyone replaced their pan? What did you guys use as a replacement?

Scott thanks for the PM”s . So , the problem isn't procedure, its a part. I wonder why what they are thinking . That seems funny to sell someone a gasket that has two dipstick holes to a motor w one dipstick. With that goofy tab coming out of the side, where the dipstick coulda shoulda woulda been. Thanks Autozone
 
The gasket was made to fit both dipstick setups, left and right sides. If I had to replace my pan I would look at a new GM if I could find one. With it in the truck I would re-use my old pan. It came off the engine, it'll go back up. The new one may not fit "just right"
 
why buy the cork crap?

go get the 1 peice gasket and fix your tried and solid pan. then clean all parts good n dry.

then bolt up the good stuff. :waytogo:

I've been PMing back and forth with him and it finally came out that he does in fact have a chrom pan AND the wrong gasket. He is using a 1 piece rubber gasket but it has the dual dipstick cutouts and in my experiance if those are used on a block other than one that came with provisions for either dipstick they will leak around one of the cutouts as there is a small place that wont seal.
 
yep thay will. and ditch that chrome crap.

helped a guy try and fix his tranny pan leak. he tryed almost everything to seal that chrome crap. i tossed on a old rusty stock pan and it never leaked again. :haha:

he still had leaks tho on the timing cover and oil pan that were chrome junk. :popcorn::haha:
 
The one piece gaskets autozone give you are junk, get a felpro. Its easier and cheaper to do it right the first time.
 
make sure you get one for either an early or a later pan too. My motors a 75 but the previous owner put the differental into the pan when he rolled it, so it had a 74 and older pan on it (Thin front seal pre-74, thick front seal post-75).
 
Ok dudes got her FIXED! Just for the record 4x4 high has it all figured out and then some. I went to napa and got the the part 1880 with the thick front seal as sugested, ,carefully placed the pan on a flat surface and banged the bolt holes w a framing hammer ,lol,installed and it worked. SO it WAS a parts database failure on autozones end.In fact, they flagged it and the next guy to go in there and asks for a pan gasket for a 1975 blazer will get = part num 1880 from now on . I did that lol.Thanks dudes! I still think the pans shouldn't be so bendable and flexi and would still like to see some better pans . If u have one post it up!:waytogo:
 
I have chrome valve covers, timing cover, and oil pan. :doah:


but it's a chevy so it's going to leak anyway. :haha:
 
Years ago,my older brother had a '69 Camaro that had a healthy small block in it--he replaced the oil pan that was rusty and dented with a ribbed aluminum Mr.Gasket one thart he bought at a swap meet for 20 bucks--after a few months he started noticing a piston slap noise when it was started up cold,and a vibration also started in,and got progressively worse,till one day he decided to pull the motor up off the mounts and pull the oil pan to see what was going on--it turned out some baffles in the oil pan had busted off,and gotten tossed around in the crankcase,and peices of it broke the piston skirts on 2 pistons,and some got into the oil pump and timing gears!...he put a stock oil pan back on it after repairing the damage and swore he'd never again use a "Mr.Gasket" oil pan....he thought aluminum would be a good choise as it will not rust,but I have seen a few corrode so badly they leaked just as bad as a steel pan too...

My friend replaces quite a few rotted oil pans,gas tanks and radiators,Spectra brand aftermarket ones are pretty good quality,a lot cheaper than OEM and they have pretty good selection of different ones for popular vehicles..
 
Rather then start a new thread i thought i would ask here about a myth i have heard. I hear that you are not supposed to use any kind of rtv with cork gasket sets. Any truth to that? and why? Seems perfectly logical to me (with only minor motor experience) that a thin bead of rtv on either side of a cork gasket would be a good thing. Yay or nay?

There is no "rule" that says you shouldn't use RTV but I only use a 1/4" dab at each corner just before installing the pan and i've never had a pan leak so long as the rails were straight/straightened before installing it.
