Pan Sugestions? What do YOU rely on?

Just the person i was hoping to hear from!!! And also pretty much the answer i was looking for!

What about on older style, perimeter bolt, SBC valve covers? Just run the gaskets and try to flatten the flange as good as possible? Or would it make any difference to smear(or bead) rtv on them?

Once again, make certain the "rails" are straight and then I only put a couple drops of RTV to hold the gasket in place ON THE COVER.

Forgive me if you have at some point done a "how to" but what is your meathod of straightning the rails? Just a couple blocks of wood, a hammer and "an eye"?

I use a socket extension, vise and hammer. I clamp the extension in the vise then lay the pain rail on top of the end of the extension (bolt hole then is crooked) then hammer it flat again. Once i'm done I look down the length of the pan rail and adjust anything that still doesn't look straight.

Rather then start a new thread i thought i would ask here about a myth i have heard. I hear that you are not supposed to use any kind of rtv with cork gasket sets. Any truth to that? and why? Seems perfectly logical to me (with only minor motor experience) that a thin bead of rtv on either side of a cork gasket would be a good thing. Yay or nay?

thats one of the biggest mistake newer mechanics make, they load that stuff on EVERYTHING...

i rarely use it.. end's of intakes.. 4 corners on a multi piece pan gasket, maybe a few other special marine spots...

i'll use gasket sealants and hi-tack tho a fair amount... permatex #300 is nice.. one side only..

lots of gaskets like the nice new felpro blue pan gaskets dont need anything.. alot of marine gaskets (graphite) you can't use anything..

i know a guy who seen a sbc with basicly no oil pressure.

had the kid pull his motor he just put together and install.

tryin to help the kid he pulled the oilpan off first. sure as sh!t the pickup tube pluged 98% with blue rtv . :doah:

that kid said he uses prob 2 tubes of rtv to make sure everything was good and sealed . he didnt want any leaks.

installed ne pickup tube and redid the gaskets the right way and motor had pefrect oil pressure and didnt leak. :dunno:

i my self like black rtv or if need super sealing ( THE RIGHT STUFF ) gasket maker. and tiny skim coat on some gaskets other just to hold it till tight.

Got it dudes! Thanks to the OP for allowing me to effectivly hijack this thread. Just figured id rather do this then start a new one.

BTW that fancy felpro pan gasket, the blue "rubber" one piece one is $40 bucks! Worth it tho i guess.

I just used the same one a couple weeks ago on mine... ran it dry...

The "rubber" felpro one? Yea, I hear they pretty much just seal without any extra help from rtvs and such. Probably worth just it just to pony up and be done with it huh?

yup, i run those totally dry... i didn't bat an eye at putting that one on my stuff... i didn't even look at my cost.. tho it was thru work so i'm sure i probably only paid about 60% or so...
