Part identification help

Yeah the big black huge cylinder shape thing. Are you sure that the starter? Seems pretty large. I thought maybe it was the oil sending unit. These pics are taken from underneath the Blazer and this sits on the passenger side right next to the oil pan.

Yeah, thats the starter. I've changed mine in the '85 K30 at least 7 or 8 times in the 10 years I've almost owned it.

So much for my tactfulness:D . By the way, the answer to your second question on what it does, it starts your engine.

Damn that's a lot of starters!!! :eek1: :eek1: What are you doing, clogging them with mud and water and burning them up?

Nope. Just normal wear and tear. I got one lifetime warranty starter from Car Quest and even though these are cheap remanufactured starters, they are just that...cheap. Every starter I've replaced was free due to the warranty. But since I don't drive the truck that much anymore, I'm not pressured to buy a brand new GM starter anymore. I've been told a brand spanking new GM starter will stop the problems.

BTW, the problem with the starters was the gear grinding against the flexplate. The more it ground, the more it wore the starter gear. Finally when it gets worn down so far, it just misses every time you turn the key. And yes, there were LOTS of grinding noises, too. Just too lazy and tired of changing starters I guess. :haha:

Dayum, did you ever try shimming your starter for proper flywheel contact?

No ****. That's what I was going to say. Most reman units even come with a shim kit.

I had to change mine out 5 years ago right when I got to Las Vegas. We hadn't been there more than a week. I bought a lifetime warranty one from Autozone and it's still running strong. I've bought a few things from Carquest, but I noticed that a lot of there stuff wasn't made or remanned very well so I stopped buying from them. :D

Yep, sure did. Problem was, the shims were putting the starter too far away from the flexplate. :doah:
Turned out the flexplate was a cheap aftermarket one that was just that...cheap. When I blew up the tranny last summer, the counter weights (ext. balanced 454) flew off damaging the flexplate and blowing two holes in the bellhousing.
I bought a new flexplate and also got another starter (number 8 or 9 now) and put those in with a newly rebuilt th400 I got off eBay. Today the setup works just fine and no grinding of the starter yet.
I think the problem was the old flexplate to begin with. Ever since I bought this truck almost ten years ago, its always had starter problems. Now I have a new flexplate, starter and rebuilt tranny in it, the problems are gone.

Are you sure it was that big black round cyl. thingy with the wires going to it that you replaced? I still can't find my oil sending unit though. haha

Oil sending unit is on top of the engine, just behind the distributor.
