OK as yall know i got the D70HD rear end for the Blazer. and ive decided to go with the 3/4 ton brakes for the disk conversion as ive heard bad things about the caddy calipers, and finding a set of mechanical calipers to do the deed is too much trouble.

SO, i went to the junkyard today to find some other parts. and low and behold there was a parted out suburban in the back. so i checked it out.

1987 2500 sierra suburban 4x4.

no idea what engine it had (long gone), it does have the 8 lug rims front and rear, the rear axle was a semi floater. but i didnt crawl under to see what it was. front axle was a non locker, or auto locking hubs.

The guy quoted me $50 for the calipers, rotors, and brake lines. think i should nab em up?

how hard is it to rebuild these? anyone have part numbers for kits?

are these the only things i should get? am i missing any critical piece's here? i dont think i need the backing plates, or mounts, as ill be ordering the conversion mounts to put the calipers on the D70HD axle.

Thanks.

There are better brake lines to use (like from a Chevette) that are dirt cheap at the parts store. Rotors you might as well buy new, since you'd pretty much pay as much to get them turned as you will for new, and those calipers/pads are dirt cheap. You;re under $100 for all those parts brand new, vs $50 for need rebuilding calipers, lines that are way too long, and rotors that may or may not even be useable.

You will need 2 pairs of caliper slider bolts, but thats another thing thats cheap enough knew that it's not worth buying used and trying to clean up.

I dont want this to look like im being a smart ass... but i just did a search on advance auto parts website....

1987 GMC Suburban V2500 4x4 w/350 engine.

rotors $46.00 each. ($90)
Caliper Pins $4 each ($16)
caliper $36 each - $93 each ($78 - $186)
pads $40 ($40)

I agree with you on the rotors, i might mic em while im there.... see if they are worth having turned (i can probably get that done for free if they have enough meat on em). For the calipers, im a bit iffy, i never like to buy the cheapest version of a part. kinda, one of those you get what you pay for moments, and in this case, the OEM parts are cheaper than the new aftermarket ones, even if they need some cleaning up.

Really, my main question was, i seem to recall everyone saying i wanted the 3/4 ton front calipers from a 70's truck, like...1975 or something like that, i just wanted to know if these were the same. on a 3/4 ton 1987 sub.

Just did mine and cost me a total of 118 bucks. 22 each for calipers and it came with bolts. rotors were 30 each if I recall correctly. and pads were 16. I'll buy good pad's later now that I've made brakes an easy item on this bus.

I did mine this year I don't remember the individual prices but it was less than 120 total. That was using autozone and carquest

Also I am not sure on the newers stuff working I think it will. I have always asked for front rotors from a 75

gotcha, thanks guys, if i get some spare time today ill shop around and price out the stuff for the 1975 models.

dont suppose you all still have any part numbers from your purchases ;)

i dunno if its just where i live, or my lack of shopping skill... or what else it could be. i have no idea how yall are staying below $120. picking the cheapest available parts from the list i still come to $242 :dunno:

even for a 1975 Chevy Suburban K20 w/350 engine.

rotors $46 ea
calipers $34 ea
brake hose $21 ea
Pads $40 (ok, coulda skimped here but dont want to.)

I think ill wind up buying the stuff from the junkyard and taking my chances. Ill most likely need at least new pads, and hopefully (fingers crossed) just need to turn the rotors. Thankfully the wheels/tires are still on the front end, so the rotors havent been sitting in the mud rusting.

i wouldnt waste money on getting them turned. why not get everything that you know will have a warranty. even if you have to order it online and get it shipped to you.

iirc you are putting h1 on. Are you putting srw hubs on that 70?

dfl701 - normally thats exactly what id do, and may still do, but the truck seemed like it was in pretty good shape, and seemed new to the junkyard so the possibility that the parts are in decent shape is good. Dunno, $50 and some elbow grease sounds alot better to me than $250 and bolt on. Then again, we are talking about brakes here..... so my own viewpoint is not to skimp money. Maybe ill just get the calipers and buy new rotors. I do like the idea of actual OEM vs $20 reman versions .

dstang97 - yup, hit the nail on both accounts. havent gotten the SRW hubs yet though.
