Paying for BB

Lots of guys stay at slickrock campground, I will be staying at moab valley rv in a cabin this year or at a hotel.

Moab has fast food places and grocery stores food prices are pretty much inline with everywhere else, restaurants it seems are a bit more expensive but not by much.

Fuel is more expensive in Moab, by as much as 30 cents.

Its always good to bring along some spare cash for autoparts if needed. Other than fuel for the wheeling rig its pretty similar to other touristy destinations.

Camping at Slickrock is where you'll find the largest concentration of people attending Blazer Bash and it's about the least expensive option. Afraid I don't know the fees there.

I have camped in our pickup bed camper at Pack Creek Campground. It was inexpensive and it's an out of the way location. It's also just a few blocks from the BBQ location Friday night.

An intermediate expense is to stay in a cabin. Several campgrounds have them, including Slickrock. I have stayed in the cabins several times at Moab Rim RV Campark. You can get a camping cabin that has a queen bed and 2 twin beds. Also has a small fridge and A/C price on their site is $49/night. The next level up is a deluxe cabin which has a bathroom w/shower and little kitchenette plus the stuff the camping cabins have all for $69/night. Here's their site: http://www.moab-utah.com/moabrim/campark.html

There are several hotels to stay in. Motel 6 is cheap and near the crowd at Slickrock, but it's not the best place to stay. Aarchview Inn is nice but pricier. I have also stayed at the Moab Valley Inn, which was nice but not cheap either. Best thing would be to call around for pricing.

Pricing for Blazer Bash registration should run about the same as the last 2 years. I'm going off memory and I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think it ranged from $25 to $55. The price varies based on the number of trail runs you choose to sign-up for.

Some of the trails may require an entrance fee. For example to access Pritchett Canyon you must pass through private property and the property owner has an entrance fee of $2. The Hell's Revenge area has an entrance fee as well, but I don't remember the fee for that, $5 maybe. I don't think any of the trails will be on Park Service property, but if it is you'll have to pay a park entrance fee. If we do enter a park it'll most likely be Canyonlands which I believe costs $10 but you can get into the park for a full week.

That's all I can think of for now.

Oh and raffle tickets at the BBQ. You get a few with your registration, but you can buy additional for $1 each.

Mapquest the mileage. If towing with a newer diesel truck, plan on 10mpg. At this point I think I would budget today for $4.50/gal diesel.

If you hotel it you will spend anything from $90/night to $130+/night depending on your taste. Like Scott said there are hotel options.

Plan to use 10 gallons of gas a day wheeling, Lunches and snacks every day, Friday food will most likely be the BBQ thus free, Dinners and breakfast can be as little as you fixing food in camp or going out to eat.

I plan for a few hundred dollars total if my wife and son don't come. But I live three hours away and camp unless I get a real cheap hotel opportunity. This year with fuel prices I am planning for a hundred more.

I think our overall budget generally pushes $600 for the wife and I staying in a cabin. That doesn't really include any souvenirs. Our trip is 420miles each way over a few 11,000ft mountain passes from home to Moab.

I am usually in the 5-7 hundo range too with my family. We live just a bit further than you 450 miles. I have gone to Moab by myself with my blazer (when gas was alot cheaper) for an entire week for under 300. And the vast majority of that was gas.

It's 1320 miles one way for me, I figured with my duramax loaded with my rig and gooseneck attached, baggage, tools, etc. I calculated 12 mpg. At 12 mpg, that's $550 in diesel one way...that goes to $650 at 10 mpg :haha:. calculated diesel at $5 a gallon...so this trip quickly adds up. If I drive all the way over there I'd probably stay a few extra days while I'm at it. I'd like to hit up one of the cabins that has a shower/ crapper in it since I'd like for my wife and kids to tag along on this experience with me. My blazer will run on propane so another question I have is on the availability of propane fueling stations...what's it like?

I don't run propane but run with guys that do and they have never had a problem getting it in Moab

the last 2 years, I have taken $1000 cash, I tow in my 83 gmc, stay in a cabin, always buy a couple souvenirs, and always have to buy some sort of part. I usually come back with less then $100

Plenty of propane all over the place, just about every campground has a big tank for the RV's.

Definitely take a week off, it's a long drive and there is a ton of great stuff in western CO to see and/or wheel :pimp:

I'm budgeting 2K just for gas alone....OUCH, but I gotta make it with my rig, funnernhell!

I am still not sure if I am going, but I will most likely hitch a ride from SLC if I don't have my rig ready.

Don't forget costs of stopping along the way. My trip is a little over 1000 miles each way and I cant do much more than 500 miles in one stretch. Look up the hotels where you plan to stop and make sure theres not some kind of event in the town. On almost every trip out, I stop in some little town that's having a huge festival or convention and all the hotels are booked or super expensive. In one town in Utah, all the hotels were booked for a quadrunner festival. The streets were jammed with little dirt bikes and quads.

So plan ahead and enjoy the drive out. Road trips are more fun when you can take time to enjoy the things you see on the way.

I've done my far share of towing around the country in the last few years.

I can get 11+ mpg at near max gross weight on a 2005 4x4 duramax, going 70 mph with average hills. I go slower than that my mileage actually drops, faster than that and it drops. This last trip to the Hammers I had one tank at 9 something as the low and two tanks at 11+ as the high. Several more fell into the 10 range.

Like I said, count on 10 mpg. Maybe a bit higher if you have a two wheel drive but I wouldn't count on it.

If your coming that far get a cabin with shower and plan to eat food you cook to help save a bit of $$. Definitely stay for a while, there are nice site seeing things around Moab that don't require wheeling.
