pcm... how screwed am i?

ok so i am deployed and before i left i thought i needed to install a new fuel pump. i did and my truck ran for about 20 min, then fuse blew like before even with the key off. my buddy went to look at it and said


"Hey we got out and looked at it and the power wire to the PCM is screwed. The PCM is screwed too. I hate to tell u all of that but we did all of the test we could before and had it running for a bit then the fuse blow and I put another one and it blow with the key off."


hows this analysis sound? if its true what is my next step, i can fix anything but this is the department i have little knowledge in...

Don't panic just yet!

What kind of engine are you running? Is it something you swapped in, or factory? Any wiring mods recently, other than the fuel pump?

i am running factory 350, tbi on my 89 k5 blazer. looking at swaping in a 5.3 or 6.0 but kinda hard being stationed in germany only going home once a year to visit and work on my truck.....
but all stock 89 k5 as far as engine comp etc

You need to trace wiring and search around before you jump to needing a new ecu.

Yup, ECMs don't just blow up for no reason. Installing a new one will only results in another blown up ECM.

You need to check your wiring anywhere it has been messed with recently and look for shorts etc

if i was in your position,i would have someone take it to a reputable shop and let them fix it.then it is warranteed and it will be ready for you to drive when you make it back home.if you are not around to mess with it,thats what i would do.good luck.something is definitely shorting out the system if it fried the ecm.that can become a whole wiring harness being burnt up if it got too bad and can cause the truck to go up in flames if not properly taken care of.id tell your family to disconnect the battery if they havent already so nothing else can short out.

yea they have disconnected the batt. i will have my friend trace the wire and rewire it. then look at the everything else. after i get back from bahrain i will go home and check the rest out my self...



anybody know how just to get rich so i can just sit at home and work on stuff?
