Machinists Workshop Mag™ recently published some information on various penetrating oils that I found very interesting. Some of you might appreciate this.

The magazine tested penetrates for break-out torque on rusted nuts.

They are below, as forwarded by a professional machinist.

They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a scientifically rusted environment.

Penetrating oil .......... Average load

None ........................... 516 pounds
WD-40 ..................... ... 238 pounds
PB Blaster .................... 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ............... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil .................... 106 pounds
ATF*- Acetone mix...........53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a home brew mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone.

Note that home brew was better than any commercial product in this one particular test.

Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results.

Note also that Liquid Wrench is almost as good as Kroil for about 20% of the price.

Steve from Godwin-Singer says that ATF-Acetone mix is the best and you can also use ATF- lacquer thinner 50 - 50 mix.

*ATF = Automatic Transmission Fluid

Some good info there :waytogo:

Kroil has been my favorite, usually get PB since it's cheaper.

Interested in testing the ATF/Acetone. Wonder how the mixture lasts when mixed, and if I put it in an old school oiler or reusable pump sprayer, would it eat it up?

a scientifically rusted environment.

I understand the need for repeatable, demonstrable testing -- I do QA as part of my job, so I get it, I do.

But my trucks have never been scientifically rusted. They are randomly and annoyingly rusted :haha:

Know what WD stand for in WD-40? Water Dispersing. Good to get rid of water. That's it.
I use Kroil and have for years. Works everytime.
Funny about the AFT. My grandpa told me that one years ago. He would dump it in a stuck Model A motor and a day later, he'd have it spinning so now when I'm at the pick a part, I'll find some ATF and dump it on stuck stuff. Works good.
I don't think acetone in that percentage mixture would hurt your plastic sprayer. And it should last as long as long as you keep it closed when not using it.
Remember, one of the main ingredients in Marvel Mystery Oil is acetone.

kroil smells like gawds vagina :waytogo:

And long term ATF smell makes me hungry. Don't know why, doesn't smell good, I don't like it. But it gives me that hungry feeling.

Ya about the pump sprayer, you seen those olive oil refillable pump cans? I'd like to see if it could pass vehicle oils/solvents through the spray tip.

Why is it whenever they test a penetrating oil they never throw ky in there? I mean it is after all a "penetrating oil"......

Or good ole plain beaver oil......best penetration oil known to man....:waytogo:

Petroleum and silicone based lubes last way longer. Glycerin gets sticky too fast

I'm gonna call BS on this "test" though. I've used everything on there and never get very good results with the ATF mixture. I actually can't seem to even keep the mixture homogeneous.

Kroil is my favorite, but I've also used some stuff from Brody Chemical that kicked ass.

how come we haven't seen something like this done sooner. Damn it. I like spray cans because I can get it into spots I can't reach with a large blast.

I started using this in a spray bottle and I can't tell if it's the placebo effect, but it seems to work very well. When it separates, I shake it up.
