You WILL get stuck in locked 2 wheel drive. Put the front shaft on. You will need 4 wheel drive. You can do it with open diffs but not just the rear. I been to Pismo quite a few times and always needed 4 wheel drive.
Another thing is if you do get stuck it can be a pain to get out because all people will not help you with out $$$(or beer).

That's pretty lame, hopefully you're headin out there with some buds.

yeah it just depends when you're out in Oceano...generally Cali people are d!cks when it comes to stuff like helping pull you out.
Most of the time you are able to find someone but its a hit and miss sort of deal...

Ok well I have a front d-shaft so I'll go put it in and check the fluid in the front end (I haven't added some and I know its a little low but since I haven't been using 4wd I haven't worried about it). Oh and I also ran by my teacher's house last night after work and got some goodies for cutting my fenders so I'm going to go lay that out...I'll post some pics tonight...

Ok I trust you guys b/c of all the real world experience you have...so you really think that I'll be ok with 4.10's and 37's...the tranny is brand spankin' new and shifts like a dream and pulls hard so just keep it in 3rd and I'll be ok on the hills? Barneybasher...you've made the drive...what do you think? Questa Grade or w/e its called on the trip home is a pretty damn good pull...

wow...I don't know why I didn't think of this before but this is the PERFECT solution to my problem...

so I was browsing through craigslist and found these...

that would be perfect...put those on and make it a heck of a lot easier on my tranny to get to Pismo (not only are they 35's but they aren't nearly as wide so it would be much easier on my drivetrain pulling those hills) then once I get to Pismo swap my 38.5's on to play for the week then before we come home swap back to the 35's...

I e-mailed the guy and if he still has them I'm going to go pick them up...especially for that price...

pismo isn't all that hard, your probably not going to be climing any huge dunes in your rig right now anyways. We got there evey year, just put that money you want to buy those tires for and buy your ring and pinion and lockers. OR buy a 60 front or something more useful then 35's.

I think you guys missed the point...I won't have enough for front and rear 5.13's, tires and possibly a locker...5.13's out back is worthless (according to this thread) so I need to either get the front and rear done or stick with my 4.10's for now...with my 4.10's I don't know if I'll make it to pismo, I know I'd be fine playing around but its pulling the hills to get there is what I was worried about...

the hills are big but i've come from pismo from north and south and there isn't anything your truck shouldn't be able to do. I mean if you have to pull a hill at 45 mph to get there then so what. But if you have a chevy with a small block and smallish tires and it wont pull a hill at at least 55 then you might want to think about a few engine mods before you regear. Torque is king and by swapping to lower gears you are trying to apply more torque to the ground. Well if you give your engine more torque you wont need as low of a gear.

Yep..Ok I just got back and I picked up those tires...get this they are only about 1.5" shorter than my current tires but they are sooooo much lighter. They'll be perfect for running over to pismo...and they have like 98%+ tread left...aparently he ran them over to pismo then ran them for about a week then took them off to go to 38's...nice find!

If your motor is that weak man you shouldn't be making a road trip like that at all.

Its not really about being "weak" its the simple fact that the truck is geared too high for comfort when it comes to pulling hills on a road trip. I'd rather be safe than sorry and just run a smaller tire over there then swap them out once I'm there for my 38.5's.

well cosmetically its not as appealing but the performance I gained sure makes up for it...they ride a heck of a lot smoother than my bias ply baja claws do, the truck pulls much harder (due to overall diameter and the signifigant weight reduction), stops quicker and the best part of all is my mpg has taken a signifigant jump...before I had to keep my foot in the throttle to maintain my speed, now once I get up to speed I hardly have to be in the throttle and it just sails down the road smooth as silk...

anyways check it out...for $250 its not too bad and it'll work for the last few weeks of school and through summer vacation...now I think the goal will be some small odds and ends...

replace the two worn out baja claws
some brake upgrades (discs out back, 1 ton MC, etc.)
re-upholster the bench seat
get the front d-shaft squared away
X-Over steering

I'll be able to get that done then just run my 35's over to Pismo then play with the 38.5's in the sand then run the 35's back home...

I would leave the 38 at home. With your current gearing and getting 4wd working, you probably do okay with the A/Ts. I don't think the Baja claws would be as good as your A/T in the sand.

I was thinking about that too...with the AT's I can get them spinning alot faster much quicker than with my baja claws but with the baja claws they are so much wider that they'll probably float on top a little better...

Id bring the baja claws and try the A/T's first. If they dont work out as well as you'd like, sawp em over

that works too...I'm just going to see what kind of funds I can come up with once I graduate and go full time...

those dont look too bad on there. sell the MTs and get a ring and pinion set.

X2 I say just run those and sell your MT's. Then you would have the money to get a locker installed. I bet it would be ok to run the 35's with the gears you have. I have 35's and 3.73s and it does ok, could be better but it does ok.

yeah it looks ok but all along this truck was being built to run 38's so I'm not going to sway from the plan now. I do agree as much as I like the MT's on there these 35's don't look half bad...with 4.10's and these super light 35's the truck flat out gets up and go's compared to before so I'll just run these and once I'm @ pismo it'll be fine b/c I'll drop it in 4low and have plenty of gears to keep the 38.5 MT's (37ish) moving in the sand...

bro listen...bfg a/t kick ass in the mud.

with the claws getting started may be a hell of alot harder than with the a/t behind our school we have a sand pit, i can stop and stomp it and my truck will kinda sink slide sideways and take off...its great, while my buddy with goodyear mtrs has to baby it haha

btw i got 33s, 3.73 an a lockright.

i like how the a/t look on your truck. if i were you, id run the a/t daily and just swap on the claws when you wheel or are just tryin to show off, the a/t willget better life and youll get better mpg.
