Phil's '88 Big Blue Build Thread

Huh. What's wrong with 35s? For your rig that sounds about right anyways.

Yeah, that's probably true. I guess it's combination of musings.

With the 4.10s, 37's would put me more where I want to be ratio wise, about 2400 RPM on the highway.

With the bigger pumpkin, (or pumpkins, if I land a Dana 60) the bigger tire would boost clearance a bit.

That said, I'm sure 35's would be just fine. Honestly, regearing my 10 bolts and a rear lunchbox would most likely be fine. hahaha.

(I have 35's now, your fave BFG ATs. Don't like the gearing as is.)

If I recall, a 60 with 37s is the same as 35s with a 10 bolt. I will be going 37s on my 60 for this reason....

What do you guys think? Probably too pricey, huh. Plus, I have to regear it to match the 4.10 on the 14 bolt.

I would avoid that, especially if you'd have to regear it anyway. It's definitely pricey (might be worth it if he's being honest about the rebuild). And it's an external-lockout axle (pre-1977 or so), so the outers don't swap with the later axles. Not a huge deal, and probably something that would never bother ya. But it does cut down on parts compatibility. And why would he drill out the rotors?

Are you wanting a locker/posi unit in your new front axle?

Not too sure. From what I understand, front lockers can shorten the life of 44/10 bolts axles, and (with a real locker, not posi) might need hydro assist. I'd be fine with a detroit in the 14 bolt i would think.

Seems expensive for a 44, but there are a lot of dollars worth of parts on there.

With an SM465 and 4.10's, 35" tires are a good choice.

I'm starting to lean towards sticking with 35s. So far I have gotten away without having to trim anything, I'd like to keep it that way.

One of the perks of sticking with 35's is its a little more common size tire to find if you're out on the back roads and you blow a tire in B.F.E. and you need to buy one. I might be wrong but 35's seem to be a "stock it" tire where a 37 would be an "order it" tire.

Thanks! Its fun every once in awhile to go back to page one and see where it started. :D

Long pants would certainly have helped. Looks like someone took a belt sander to the back of my legs.
