Phil's '88 Big Blue Build Thread

No, go 1 ton TRE on everything. Then if you poop something, it matches everyone else's spares
Plus they are more durable

Why does the steering arm have a "standard" and "Large" 1 ton hole?

The tie rod in the picture fits the "standard" hole. I'm guessing that is the passenger side TRE. However, the red one they sent fits the "large" hole. But that would be for the arm on the steering box end.

I think I'll call them and ask them a bunch of dumb questions. lol.

If you have doubts about parts fitting together, call who you ordered from. Went that way on mine, lots of D60 front trucks in our world to share parts with

I called them, it makes more sense now.

They have a 3 1/2" drop pitman arm that is set up for the 1 ton TRE. So I'll order that.

Only thing I need to do now is probably ream the driver's side knuckle for 1 ton and figure out a tie rod with 1 ton ends. I wasn't planning on all this beef, but i guess that's where I'm headed. lol.

Many days my job consists of a lot of quiet time with the occasional "Phil, come quick. The Heater Pad machine is down. They saw sparks". Stuff like that.

One day I should take some pics of what I have to work with. Most of our assembly equipment was built by me and the owner with scrapyard stuff, stuff we had sitting on a shelf, and a smattering of random parts from McMaster Carr and Grainger. There are days when I feel like laughing and crying at the same time.

Phil I left you a cookie in the easy listening thread

So, I got my Ruffstuff crossover kit. It has huge 1 ton 2234 tie rod ends. I know I need a 4" drop steering arm. Will I need to get it reamed to fit the tie rod?

I looked at the Ruffstuff crossover steering myself because they had a good deal on them recently. It looks like the Ruffstuff crossover kit requires welding of the tie rod bungs into the crossover link after cutting down the crossover link to proper length. Is this correct? The crossover link is also straight, as opposed to ORD's, which has a bend in the drag link, in order to have the tie rods operate at a straighter angle. The Ruffstuff crossover link looks to be made of a stronger steel than ORD,s, and their steering arms look like they are designed for the king pin spring elimination kit. ORD,s kit seems to be more "plug and play", which is why it is more expensive. The Ruffstuff kit seems less so, but stonger for more hard core wheeling. I am talking DANA 60 though, which may be a whole different animal than you are dealing with.

All of what you said is true, although I don't know what a king pin spring elimination kit is. The kit says it's for a Dana 44/10 bolt. My boss can weld the bungs in for me.

I am a little worried I have gone too far with it, and should have ponied up for the ORD one though.

You haven't gone far.

You barely have toes in the pool...

If I where a better welder, I would have you come over to my place to install this kit, but I would not trust my welding. I could handle installing the arms, and properly cutting down the crossover link, but I would not trust my welding skills with my Lincoln Mig 140 AMP welder. I am not sure if a Dana 44 / 10-bolt has king pin springs like a dana 60.
