You don't want the cover to hang below the diff housing. When you put the new on make sure it doesn't, if it does, grind it down.

Yep. When I built my cover (3/8" plate) I Made it protect that lip. It humped a few things, all the oil is still in it.Yeah, I was wondering why the factory made a cover than the lip hangs below the housing. There was no way to raise it high enough.
I guess they never really figured we'd be commuting down a pile of boulders.

My rear diff covers all have 12 or 14 bolts!! Only 2 have 12....

I think maybe 1/2" ?? I don't remember now. It still had 14 bolts, can't remember if it still has a header bolt in the bottom, it Allen head.How much did you cut off the rear plate cover?
