Phil's '88 Big Blue Build Thread

One issue that I've run into with side posts is that it's easy to strip out the lead threads that the bolt screws into. Once that happens that battery becomes much harder to get reliable life out of.

So while it's good that your cables are tight, it means you're engaging fewer threads than normal and this is already a weak spot. Either of the solutions above eliminates this problem.

In fact, in the third photo I am using one of the fancy lugs to hold just one cable. That's a bit of overkill (and is mostly because that post was handy when I installed the battery), but it does help with thread stripping.

Any time I strip something soft like the lead in the battery I wrap wire around the male threads to take up the slack. Jam it up good and it'll stay there until the battery completes it's life cycle.

Changing dash speakers. I thought about doing the whole gauge brightening thing, but the way it is now is fine with me, I just cleaned the gauge faces and windexed the clear plastic.

I sprayed mine with some new reflective paint, replaced the burned out bulbs and it just looked more "even" than anything else.

I sprayed mine and replaced the bulbs with leds...and I think it's dimmer than it was before. :doah:

Sounds like this problem is uniquely mine, though. I've heard a number of stories about bright leds. :dunno:

I bet just getting the 28 years worth of dust off of everything will help mine somewhat.

I did the whole spray paint thing but not to make it brighter. To help spread the light out.

I dim my gauges way down when driving at night.

It did help. Then I realized I drive a 27 yr old truck lol.

Stereo is in and working. Added a small personal touch. Not stepping on @76zimmer's toes. Just thought it was cool. At least for now. lol. I can lose it later if I don't like it.

I like my lights dim too...I use to do most of my traveling at night...

I have my ex's stereo (Sony) from her truck. Think I'll install it this weekend. Tired of the off key voices in my head.....

Thanks! It's not a Dana 60 swap or anything, but I like it. lol.

Your k5 reminds me of the one in Jaws II. Those are my favorite colors, blue & white. Nice looking rig!

Thanks, I really appreciate that. I love just driving it around, makes me feel like a million bucks.

Because pic whore. I'm trying to decide between the bolt on steering box brace or the weld on. I'm not a welder, but I know people that can help get it done for a case of PBR or something. But I can bolt the one on myself on my own schedule. Is the bolt on one good enough?
