Dads 2012 Elk Hunt... Should have had a bull!!!
Well after my success earlier in the year during second season. My dad had a bull and cow tag for the 4th season. It started on a Wednesday and went through sunday. He had been up in the area all week and managed to only see a few fleeting glimpses of elk running off... Well saturday we hit an area and looked hard but did not see an elk 1. Cut only 2 tracks. So on sunday I took him into one of my favorite areas right at first light. We started up the road and immediately found 2 elk heading up the mountain. They were both spikes so after a brief moment of excitement we were let down.
We continued up the canyon and about 1 mile up we found a single cow out, the shot would have been pretty far and she acted calm considering how late into the season we were. So we let her slip up into the trees and backed up and took after her on foot.
My dad and I climbed to the nearest ridge and after about a 40 minute stalk we stepped around a tree and there a bull standing at 30 yards broadside. I whisper for him to get up with me. He comes up fast settles in and shoots. The elk all run off... There ended up being like 7 cows and the bull. The cows were all back in the trees at about 80 yards. I am pretty certain that little bull was the luckiest animal on the mountain that day. My dad never saw him. He had no idea we were even there until the shot...
At any rate my dad made a less than desirable shot on the cow and managed to completely blow up the rear knee. The cow turned and headed down hill where we put her down. Actually the cow went right back to where we had seen the first one from the blazer. Needless to say I was able to back the blazer over to her and load her up. Not a bad year, hopefully next year will get a little better... We 3 for in general rifle elk hunts... Only tag I did not fill was my archery tag.
I am sure glad I can still get the old man out. He actually does pretty well I am just always concerned when he is out by himself...
Now time to find some cats!!!
Thank fully there was a good ditch for the rear tires. It lowered the rear tailgate like nearly 3 feet. Of course we were then loading the elk uphill in the back.
