*PIC* Finally got a tow rig...

What is done with the transmission? Her '00 is almost the same as my '01.5. I think the first thing I am going to do is the tranny....The ATS triplock converter, VB, and their rebuild kit before the stocker lets go and leaves me stranded, like I did with my th700R4. I basically plan on the same setup with the Edge Comp, injectors, 5" strait exhaust, FASS, and air intake. Maybe an HX-40 or B-1 bomber turbo one day but not anytime soon.

It is a 5spd...

Why do you fellas say an '00 Dodge Cummins will beat an '04-5? My dad has a new one and it seems faster then any other STOCK diesel I've been in.

Different strokes for different folks. I like new trucks cause for the most part they are more reliable, comfortable and get better MPGs. To me, if I had the money it would be worth the price.

I don't have the money though, like my dad, so I bought a blazer!

Rjfguitar,

Clean out your damn PM box already. And sign onto AIM sometime, we got some chattin' to do.

As to the '00 out pulling mine with 5 gears instead of the 6 mine is going to have, with nearly as much power? Good luck. I don't think either has a clear advantage here.

Bring it to BB '05 and let's find out, I'm sure there's some pretty cool mountain passes out there.

Baddog would show us both up with his BOMB'ed Durasmack with an auto though (no clutch, no lost boost, faster acceleration, no doubt in my mind there).

where's blazer bash?

Maybe I could bring my dad's '05 Quad cab dually... Automatic. Should be sporting some mods by then...

Moab, UT.

I'm going to try to go.

No BOMB'ing for me. Exhaust and gauges is all I have any desire to do. I don't want to be my own warranty provider for an $8000 engine.

All I know is I could have bought 8 of my rigs for what you paid for yours Tim, good luck with the payments:yikes:

Read a few posts back, the '00 is BOMBED and the '05 is stock.

:doah:  I have been meaning to clean out my PM box.....

Thats why I went the auto route myself. One phone call to ATS and their 47RE could be to my door and be just as reliable as the manuals and be much faster from the lack of lost boost between shifts.

Yeah but you're a Diesel genious....I'm not. I need something new that isn't going to break down for a while so I can go through the learning curve of learning Diesel engines....

If I was as good with Diesels as I am with gassers, I would have found the most raggedy 12v Cummins truck I could find and started wrenching until it was perfect, but for now, the nice, shiny, brand new one will have to do.

I don't believe that to be the case myself. I think that the BOMBed auto trannies are alright, and decently reliable for what they do, but I really don't feel that they'll ever match the reliability of a manual transmission.

That said, I got the stick because I personally prefer it. If I preferred an auto I would have just gone that route.

It's too bad nobody has a 6 speed automatic, or a 7 speed manual to go with the Cummins. It really wants more gears.

I could have given you advice when needed, but anyway, if a new truck is what you wanted, more power to ya. My dad has a 2003 3/4 ton and it is NICE, of course its just a HEMI, 2wd, but with the NV4500, it flat out accelerates, and the interior is real nice IMO.

You might have given me advice had you not blocked me on AIM about a year ago.

And yeah your dad's truck is real nice, regular cab with gasser isn't so bad, but I swore I'd never buy another one, finally I am getting a Diesel.

More like 3 months ago, got tired of constant arguing. He doesn't ever tow with it, just haul stuff to the dump and such, but if he did tow a diesel would be mandatory.:cool1:

Well, I agree. IF a guy gets 200K out of the ATS version auto that is darned good...and good for any auto really. The 6 spd still would have another 200-300K left in it. The driveability is where it is worth it having the auto for me. Here in Modesto the traffic is turning into L.A style and it is nice not having to shift in that crap. If all I planned on doing was towing, no crazy traffic to deal with I would have went with an HO 6 spd myself.

Dodge has the new 545RE (something like that) and is a 5spd auto but they don't think it can handle cummins power. One thing with the auto, even though there are only 3 spds available when towing the lockup helps "substitute" as an extra gear between shifts, but not near as good as actually having another real gear or two....

Not to my knowledge you can. I know the main problem with the 47RE's is that they were designed to go behind the V10 to where more RPM's would spin the front pump than the cummins. With 3.54 gears the cummins spins the front pump just above the minimum PSI requirement for proper operation. That is why they can slip easily under heavy loads and power because there is just barely enough PSI on the clutches and with a bunch of miles on them and develop internal pressure losses, they drop below the minimum PSI. Anyway, towing in OD = low pump speeds, which = low PSI, which= not enough oil flow, which = hot temps and easy slippage.

THis is why they are so much stronger with just a VB and TC upgrade. The VB bumps the PSI way up and makes the hydralic system handle more power.

This is basically what I have gathered over at www.tdr.com.

How does it defeat the purpose?

:doah: Wow. I sure am glad my post about a new, CHEAP tow rig turned into a "what tranny is cool in a new Dodge" post...:doah:
