pickup tailgate on blazer

Hey Guys, Im building a K5 Blazer that i have Shortened the bed on, and am not planning on using the hard top any more. Im look to put a pickup gate on. does anyone know the difference between a 77-80 and 81-87 gate. I bought a gate for a 86 k10 to fit my 86 k5 but it is to thick. Is a gate from an 80 thinner? The hardware looks like it will bolt on.
