Pics of my K5 and a few questions! *Exhaust anyone??*

I went ahead and bought a new t-stat and put it in with the gasket change.. water no longer shoots out of there!

I also tore the dash apart and got the gauge clusters out, found out why the speedomoter wasn't working, the power cables to it were cut. The cable to the t-case is good I think, but I'm not sure how to test it. It looks good on both ends. The only problem I have is I can't find the power cables for it :( I don't think this is the original gauge cluster either.. it's got "85" written on it in crayon.

Anyone know where I can find info on putting a manual oil pressure gauge in?

i don't think theres a power cable to the speedo. on mine, it's just the line from the tcase.

If you buy a mechanical oil pressure gauge they include inscructions on how to hook it up.

Well there is a power cable to the speedometer(at least right behind it near where the cable from the t-case hooks up) and it is cut..

Is there a way I can test the speedometer cable?

maybe you're thinking of the vehicle speed sensor? for cruise control? is it a small plug that goes into the back?

i have an extra speedometer here at my place if you wanna cruise down and try it out sometime. that would rule out the speedo if it still doesn't work. if it works, you can have it.

unhook the cable from the t-case. chuck the end in a drill and spin it slowly while someone watches the speedo. If the speedo doesn't do anything, unhook the cable from the back of it. spin the cable again. If both ends are spinning then your problem is either the gauge or the gear in the t-case.

Thanks gentlemen!

Colby, I'm going to have to take you up on that when I get a chance.. need to do the starter first or else I'm liable to not get going again :haha:

I think I've figured out my plans, so far..

First will be the starter, obviously :p:

Next will be the Exhaust, still not sure what to do with that(being in college sucks sometimes).

Then I'll be trying to locate some rims for the front that at least kinda match the back.. the fronts really bug me for some reason :eek1:

I'll also be putting in the ORD Steering box brace soon, I have a couple things I'll be using to free up funds that'll make it possible. Figured from what I read that should priority.

I also need to get the gauges figured out and get an oil pressure gauge set up(that is actually kinda tops after the starter right now..). I have a small oil leak on the front seal and my idiot light doesn't work, nor does my dipstick give a good reading :( I think the gauge cluster came from an auto, looking at it it's got all the markings for a column shift.

Before winter I need to get a new back window, and redo the door seals. Not sure what to do about the later, but it doesn't seem too hard to find windows(in tailgates though).

Fun project, that is for sure :D Just to find the time...

Okay, new question!

What do you do about patching holes in the floorboards? Mine arn't rusted through all over, just a couple spots(rest are rust free, mostly since someone had the sense to strip the carpet out).

go knock over a couple of street signs:D.

i would just get some sheet metal and make some patch panels and a couple of self tapping screws.

there is probaly a better way to do it though

actutally that is a pretty good way to do it...use self tappers to hold it into place take 1out at a time, fill in with welds.

Thats how we did the floors in my moms 51 burb...i think dad is going to usea sealer around the edges though...

I did a little wheeling today with a friend(who had an '81 Toyota)... it did extremely well for a stock truck, though the ground was dry. The only trouble I had was flooding on a really steep hill, backed it up and started it up and got a good run at it and went up and over.

Running with a manual was much more interesting than an auto, lot more effort but the pay off is worth it. Granny low was quite handy coming off a couple really steep hills as well :eek1:

Flexxes really good too, pics to come :D

On another note I smell like exhaust, but it is a good feeling :haha:

Oh yeah, I'm sure its either the gear in the t-case or the cable now on the Speedometer, it didn't move at all going down the road.. didn't have gauges tonight, none worked anyways.

Well I went crawling around under the truck today, didn't do much really other than find some misc things. The cable is hooked up to the t-case and working(checked it with a drill), so I think it must be the gear inside the case..

Now here's the two strange things.. I thought my case was was a NP208 that took ATF for fluid. Unfortunatly I didn't have my tools today so I couldn't open the fill plug and take a look :( I havn't put any in or checked it YET but I plan to.

Here's a picture of it, filthy at that:

I found kinda fresh gear oil on the outside near the drain plug(not much but it was definatly gear oil). I also noticed that it looks like there's red RTV where the two halves of the case bolt together(almost like someone had it apart at one time).

The other thing I noticed was on the top of the case, there was a plug with two wires on it and the wires were cut and taped. Whats the deal with that?

The NP208 and NP241 both take ATF. If there's gear oil in there then the PO made a mistake. The wires coming out the top are for your 4wheel drive indicator light.

Sounds to me like someone has been messin around with your tcase...

Not taking it out till I get a look in there. That does look like a 208 right? The gear oil could possibly be from the trans, but when I checked that it looked fine and full.

you can see the outline of the tag in the pic, its directly below the bolt holding the tailshaft housing on. clean that off. it will tell you the model, build date and ratio.

Guess I'm now a member :wink1:

Here's some pics from my little adventure, found a good easy spot to flex it in :D

Nothing like poser shots :D

On a side note, I picked up some manifolds today from a '76 Blazer, only paid $20 for them. They look like they'll bolt up right except for maybe where the powersteering pump bracket bolts up.. we'll see I guess. Need to figure out how to get them hooked up to the pipes too...

Thanks!

Might as well make this the nevering end project thread :eek1:

I'm kinda thinking this rig might be a good daily driver with a fresh TBI 305 in it... what sort of fuel mileage would a properly built 305 get? Yeah.. lots of variables..

don't waste your time with a 305. there is no replacement for displacement. the difference in fuel economy between a 305 and a 350 is nothing.
